SCHOOL CAPTAINCY One of the highlights of the school year, for me, is when our Grade 5 students present in front of their peers and outline why each of them would make a wonderful captain for our school. The School Captain speech session took place yesterday and all teachers and staff in attendance were inspired by the passion, ideas and self confidence displayed or articulated during the session. The voting of peers thereafter determined the shortlist of five girls and five boys to be interviewed by school leadership to determine next year’s school captains. The announcements will be made next week.
REMEMBRANCE DAY Today we observed a minutes silence after a brief ceremony in honour of all of those who have served for Australia in the armed forces.
SCHOOL COUNCIL School Council met on Tuesday night to discuss a range of matters and approve a range of policies and financial documents. These included the draft cash budgets and parent payments for 2022, finance reports for September and October, student dress code, digital learning and yard duty and supervision policies, and a small increase in OSHClub fees for 2022. We further discussed our student surveys with regards a possible change in the language we study at Viewbank PS. You will be aware of the surveys conducted during the middle of the year mooting a possible change of language study from Japanese to other languages including Auslan. Given the turbulent year we have had, and the need for more informed decision making, we have put this on the back burner until 2022-2023. We also looked at the final master plan for our building works, and the staged build to commence in the middle of 2022. I will have more to say on that in a feature item in next week’s newsletter.
PARENT REQUESTS FOR GRADE PLACEMENTS 2022 A reminder that these close TOMORROW, so that we can commence the process of grade selection for 2022.
That’s it for me this week. A short newsletter that doesn’t reflect how busy we all are at the moment (good busy!!). I hope everyone has a good weekend and that the rain stops soon!
Kind regards,
Bill Kersing
Principal
This week has certainly seen us moving towards 2022.
We welcomed a large number of our future Foundation students to their first onsite Transition session where they got to experience ‘big school’ and meet the current Foundation teachers. I look forward to catching up with them again in a few weeks when they return for two classroom sessions with their 2022 class mates and teacher as well as meeting their families at the Information evening later in November.
It was once again a privilege to be invited to listen to the Year 5 candidates delivering their School Captain speeches to their peers, Mr Kersing, Ms Boness and the Year 5 teachers.
It makes me very proud to hear students speaking passionately about our school, the values they demonstrate and their understanding of a good leader. I look forward to meeting with the shortlisted candidates on Friday before the final decision is reached. I’m confident our school will have passionate student leaders in 2022.
And finally, just to keep the week super busy, we began the selection process for several Staff vacancies. These appointments will be announced in coming weeks.
As busy as the week has been, it was important to take the time to pause and reflect on Remembrance Day. It’s been a tough year but we are incredibly lucky to live in such a wonderful country.
Take care and have a great week.
Gill

Semester 2 Reports Schools are required to formally report student achievement and progress to parents and carers at least twice per school year. The reporting process is a significant form of communication that documents student level of achievement and reflects where each student is along the learning continuum for all curriculum areas taught in the semester. Student reports include a teacher judgement based on assessment undertaken throughout the reporting period (semester) as well as students’ learning tasks and experiences.
The Department of Education and Training has recently adjusted the expectations around student reporting for Semester 2 in recognition of the disruptions caused by COVID-19.
Viewbank Primary School will therefore provide a modified written report for the parent/carer of each student enrolled at the school for Semester 2, 2021, focusing on what progress has been made and what has been achieved by each child.
Reports will include:
- attendance
- a description of the areas of the Victorian Curriculum Foundation to Level 10, including Towards Foundation Levels A to D, taught for English and Mathematics
- student achievement information represented on a continuum of learning
- progress made since the last time these curriculum areas were reported on
- a five-point scale
Parents/carers are welcome to contact your child’s classroom teacher to arrange a time to discuss your child’s report and this will again be communicated when reports are sent home.
Thank you for the continued support of your children transitioning between learning at home and onsite learning.
