Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

We were delighted to welcome Mr Nick Hewlett, Headmaster of St Dunstan's College, to Oakfield on Monday to take Assembly for us. He reflected on the virtue of patience as we begin the season of Advent leading up to Christmas and how waiting with patience and optimism is an important character trait to practise in our fast-moving world where responses and gratification can so often be immediate.

It reminded me of growing up without mobile phones, social media, instant messaging and access to information. I can remember writing to my friends during holidays from university and having to wait for their replies, as well as longed-for phone calls on the landline!

Learning patience is of course something that is sometimes forced upon people due to circumstances such as illness, accident and also the kind of separation from family and friends that many have experienced over the last two years or so. Mr Hewlett told the children the stories of the explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton trapped in the Antarctic ice and also of Nelson Mandela in prison for 27 years before his 'long walk to freedom'; both individuals having to draw upon deep reserves of endurance and resilience as they waited for release.

I wish you all happy and relaxing weekends as we continue in preparation for and anticipation of the holiday period to come.

YEAR 6

Philosophy of Religion

Year 6 played a game with dreidels and chocolate coins in celebration of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah! We also lit the candles on a menorah and learnt about the story of Judah Macabee.

YEAR 3

Science

In maths, some Year 3 children have been using a more hands on approach to help with the division learning. Children have been investigating numbers that divide by 3 by rolling two dice and adding the numbers together. They then checked to see if their numbers would equally divide by 3.

The children have concluded that all number which divide by 3 are in the 3 times tables.

Drama

In drama, Year 3 have been learning all about improvisation! Here the children are improvising the roles of everyday heroes within our society.

Science

In our science lesson today, the children learnt about the characteristics of producers, predators and prey and their role in the food chain. They gathered information about the different animals by studying their diet, characteristics and their habitats. They then produced and described our very own food chains using these animal pictures.

YEAR 2

Mathematics Money Mayhem!

All this week in Mathematics the year 2 children have been refreshing all their learning on British Money. The children reviewed all British notes and coins and sorted them by size, shape and value. The children then moved on to adding up different amounts and solving money-based problems!

YEAR 1

The holiday season is upon us and the children have been working so hard learning their songs and poems. They have been really impressing us with their growing independence and ability to solve problems by themselves.

In English, they learned how to set out a letter and they wrote letters back to Steve Backshall to thank him for his letter and to tell him some of the facts about the animals that they have researched. Have a look at some of these wonderful letters below!

UPPER FOUNDATION

Maths

This week we have been working on a special Santa Maths challenge. The children have been helping Santa put his presents in order.

LOWER FOUNDATION

The children worked in twos and threes to decorate the tree with bottle tops and pom-poms and they love the result, which is now proudly displayed on the wall.

NURSERY

The children have been very busy in Santa’s workshop! They have been writing their letters to Father Christmas and posting them in the magical postbox.

Tonoya said she would like a “Teddy Bear” for Christmas .

We have also been practising wrapping presents ready for Santa to deliver on his sleigh.
