Career & Academic Planning Fall 2017 Updates

New Liaisons to Diverse Student Communities

While all our advisors are generalists and can meet with any student, we now have designated liaisons to the following offices and student groups:

  • All 7 JMU Colleges
  • Athletics
  • Center for Global Engagement
  • Center for Multicultural Student Services
  • LGBTQ+ & Ally Education Program
  • Office of Disability Services
  • Veterans

Unpaid Internship Scholarship

Last year, we were able to offer scholarships of $1,000-5,000 to 23 students with unpaid summer internships. We are happy to announce that we are able to offer the scholarship again this year! Follow the link below for eligibility requirements, and apply by April 13th, 2018.

Student Advisory Board

This was our first semester working with our new Student Advisory Board to gain feedback on our events and services. The group of 13 students assembled once a month and provided us with a student perspective on everything from programming ideas and impressions of our office to t-shirt designs and Instagram. The application window to join next year's Student Advisory Board will be January 15 - March 1.

Fall 2017 Career Fair

Every fall and spring, we invite employers and students to join our 2-day Career & Internship Fair in the Festival Center. While some colleges within JMU offer career fairs that are only open to students in a specific major, this Campus-Wide Career Fair offers job and internship opportunities to students from any major.

Record-Breaking Attendance

This fall, over 2,000 students participated in the fair, making it our highest student attendance for a Career Fair in JMU history. Check out this live video that captures the high energy of this event!

Winner of $1,000 Career Fair Scholarship

Congratulations to Arissa Gordillo, senior BioTech major and winner of our $1,000 Career Fair scholarship! Every semester, a student is randomly selected to receive this scholarship from those who signed in at the fair and completed the post-fair survey. We highly value student feedback, which helps us improve the fair each year.

LinkedIn Photo Booth

We had record-breaking participation in our LinkedIn photo booth at Career Fair this year as well, with 568 students getting portraits taken in their professional attire.
