Minimester March 19-23, 2018

While the rising freshmen and current sophomores were off on their trips, the 6th and 7th grade explored DC, international music, cooking, art and more!

Air and Space Museum

"How do airplanes fly? Using paper airplanes and scientific methods, students will explore the relationship between an airplane's center of gravity and flight stability. They will make and test their paper airplanes, collect and graph their findings, and reach conclusions on how to improve their designs. After lunch, you will watch a STEM-themed IMAX movie." - Ms. Tong

"For this workshop, you will visit the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. The “Paper Airplane Design” STEAM workshop will be led by the museum’s experts. You must either bring a bag lunch or money to purchase lunch in the museum cafeteria for this workshop." - Ms. Tong

Food Deserts

"If you were stranded in a desert, you might be thirsty and hungry and find very little to help you relieve your thirst and hunger. Well did you know that in our very own city, we have deserts? They’re not the kind of deserts you might be imagining, though. In this workshop you will explore the concept of food deserts and food accessibility in the DC area. You will discover what makes up a food desert and where they can be found. You will also research what kinds of food stores (organic markets, commercial grocery stores [Whole Foods, Giant, Safeway], farmers’ markets, community shops, and food banks) are available to each community, the limitations of each store, and accessibility to the stores. You will then utilize the knowledge you gain to devise a solution and create a piece of art to help support those communities identified as food deserts." - Ms. Wilson & Ms. Wilson Odhiambo

"What I really liked is that we had to simulate what it is like to live in a food desert and carry our very heavy groceries along. We ended up ripping all of Ms. Odhiambo's bags but we found very creative ways of carrying them" - Mateo Sanguinetti-Zelikow

Sushi

"Do you love to eat sushi? How much do you know about where it comes from or how it’s made? For some it’s all about the fish, for others it’s all about the non-fish ingredients . We are going to explore a variety of sushi making recipes and techniques that include cooked fish and raw or cooked non-fish ingredients. We are also going to learn about the history of sushi and how it developed in Japan and some of the issues surrounding seafood sustainability. Come hungry and with a willingness to try new things and learn some sushi making techniques." - Ms Bachman

"While making sushi we looked at what sushi was sustainable and the cost of sushi on the environment, we also made sushi" - Laura Martinelli

Bikes of the World

"Bikes for the World is a US-based nonprofit humanitarian organization and volunteer network that collects thousands of used bicycles, as well as bike parts and tools, and delivers them to community programs in developing countries. On Tuesday, you will be introduced to their mission, learn to strip/prepare bikes for transit, and load cargo containers that will be shipped around the world. You will return to Bikes for the World on Wednesday and join a continuous service program. Here you will work alongside Juniors and Seniors from Stone Ridge of the Sacred Heart (another independent school in our DMV area) and continue to help prepare bikes to be delivered across the globe. Our WIS group will also explore the options of sponsoring a bike drive in our own community and schedule Bikes for the World for collection." - Mr. Ell & Ms. Tanksi

“A bicycle can get someone someplace… like from poverty to self-sufficiency.”

Crossfit

"Are you ready to create some muscle and sweat and a true sense of satisfaction? This workshop will introduce you to what "Crossfit" is. We will go to a Crossfit gym in D.C. to see what it's like, and try out completely new things like rope climbs and sled pulls! This workshop will be fun and games, and is perfect for anyone who likes to move around, try new things, and get a little competitive! Be sure to wear comfortable clothing that you can move around in, sneakers, and bring a water bottle." - Ms. Strangfeld & Ms. Gilliland

DC Off the Beaten Path

"Think you know DC? This workshop will introduce you to some of the spots in the city that are not on a typical tourist’s path. First we’ll have a private tour of Congressional Cemetery, where some of DC’s most fascinating, notorious, and notable people are buried. Then we’ll walk to have lunch at the famous Market Lunch (known for their blueberry-buckwheat pancakes!) inside historic Eastern Market. We’ll wrap up with a tour of the Library of Congress, one of the most breathtaking buildings in the city. Come prepared to do lots of walking, and dress for the weather! This workshop is happening rain or shine. If you want to buy lunch, you’ll need cash because cards are not accepted at Market Lunch. You can also bring a bag lunch if you prefer." - Ms. Holcombe

Go Go Music

"Attention, music lovers! Did you know that DC is the birthplace of go-go music? Go-go is a type of dance music that blends funk, r&b, Latin music, jazz, and old school hip-hop. In this interactive music workshop, we’ll explore go-go’s history and create live go-go music with the help of a professional go-go musician. Bring your instruments and your voices and get ready to go-go!" - Ms. Wilding & a Go-Go Musician

Gymnastics

"Can you stick it? Find out in this intense workshop that will teach you the basics of gymnastics. You’ll warm-up and condition, just like real gymnasts. Then you’ll participate in several gymnastics challenges. Wear comfortable athletic clothing, sneakers or socks with grips, and tie long hair back. Bring a water bottle and be prepared to SWEAT!" - Ms. Chintha & Nina Young

Startup in a Day

"Have you ever wanted to solve big problems and create your own business that helps the world? In this workshop we will #explore entrepreneurship and work in teams to think creatively and invent new products or services that address every-day opportunities. Each team will select a challenge and come up with a new, unique, innovative product or service. Your mission is to show how the product or service will impact people’s lives on a day-to-day basis and how you will market your great new innovation. You will complete a set of activities designed to encourage creativity and innovation in preparation for the challenge. Teams will create an explanation of the product or service, a description of the innovation, a customer profile, and a storyboard, script, and 60-second commercial." - Ms. Wilding and Ms. Chintha

Journey of Rice

"As Maya Angelou wrote, “We are more similar than different, my friend.” In this workshop, you will study how a grain of rice can mean something different to everyone, depending on their culture. You will do some research on how rice is used in cuisines around the world. Then you will work in groups to prepare rice-based dishes. Along the way, you will document your process and create a series of photos or a short video about how to prepare your dish! Seventh graders, you need your iPad for this workshop." - Ms. Adhikari

"I had Journey of Rice and Sushi Making on Friday which was my favourite day." - Laura Martinelli
