Audra Tosone Is Named League MVP for Field Hockey By sydney SCales and catie martin

According to the NCAA, less than 2 percent of all high school athletes go on to play Division I NCAA college sports. These athletes typically focus primarily on their top sport during their high school years; however, a Division I commit at Walpole High School not only defies these norms by playing three high school sports but is also a standout athlete in each one.

Senior Audra Tosone was named the Bay State League Most Valuable Player for field hockey in her final season as a Porker. Over the past three years, Tosone has excelled in field hockey, hockey and lacrosse. Next year, she will continue her lacrosse career with University of Massachusetts Amherst, a Division I team.

With a total of 10 field hockey teams in the Bay State Conference, each with a minimum of 11 players, Tosone had a 0.9 percent chance at most of winning this prestigious award. With these odds, Tosone does not overlook this special recognition, even though this is not the first esteemed award she has received.

“Every time I get an award for sports, I don’t ever take it for granted because it goes to show that your hard work truly does pay off,” Tosone said. “I think earning this award, especially my senior year, just goes to show how my hard work has paid off, and I am grateful for it.”

Tosone has played varsity field hockey for her coach Jen Quinn for her last two seasons as a Porker after previous head coach Marianne Murphy retired following Tosone's sophomore season. Quinn has watched Tosone prosper into a strong athlete over her four years as a Porker.

“The fire she has within is totally old-school competitiveness,” Quinn said. “She is mentally tough and will do anything possible to get the job done. She is the whole package: smart, athletic, a good teammate and a good person.”

The Porkers have always been considered a top competitor in the Bay State League. The team earned the Division I state title during Tosone's sophomore year and came close in prior years.

“Just simply winning games is obviously a great feeling, but being on a team where everyone is so athletic and works so well together is something really special, that you don’t always come across,” Tosone said. “I think that with being a dominant team we always have this target on our back, and people always want to beat us or rash on us, but just working hard will always pay off like it did for us this season.”

Audra Tosone, who has made impacts in each of her sports, is a prominent part of the athletic community in Walpole. Not only has she made an impact on the community, she has also made unbreakable bonds with her teammates.

“Every sport season I am a part of, there is such a great bond with your teammates and such fun memories made. I am going to miss the friendships that I made with my teammates more than anything because they are what make a team so functional and desirable to be a part of,” Tosone said.

As Tosone finishes out her senior year of high school, she looks forward to a bright future in college. Tosone will play Division I lacrosse next year at UMass Amherst and carry her on her athletic legacy.

“I am most looking forward to being on a sports team again because in high school, you make a lot of your friendships and memories,” Tosone said. “I feel like meeting a bunch of new girls and being in a whole new atmosphere is a little bit scary but will be very exciting.”
