Pictures photographed for Rebuilding Lives: The Cathal Ryan Trust, 2010-2013. The book is a visual documentation of this four-year undertaking by the Trust, in partnership with UNICEF. The Trust’s activities centred around education, health and child protection as well as water, sanitation and hygiene. This short selection looks at the lives of students after the end of the war.
Welcome speech delivered to members of the Trust and UNICEF, by head girl, Sutharsini Sureslingam of Pooneryn Maha Vidyalayam on the opening of new school buildings.
Students who once were part of a war now have the opportunity to reintegrate with others their age and to catch up on years of missed education; Mullitech campus, Mullaitivu.
An expended 132mm artillery shell functions as the school bell at Mullaitivu Maha Vidyalayam. It is rung with a drumstick from the new music room.
Though now patched with concrete, bullet holes in classroom walls serve as a reminder of our recent behaviour; Mullaitivu Maha Vidyalayam.
