FSS Impact Report 2018-2019 Fiscal Year

Dear Friends,

It is with deep gratitude for our community that I share this snapshot of the impact of your philanthropy from 2018-19. You will see from the two program updates and the long list of donors by classroom, that we are a school that understands the power of coming together and supporting our mission and values. We look forward to giving you a fuller picture and recognizing all our donors at all levels in our Annual Report once the work on our annual audit is underway. However, we wanted to take a moment now as we start the school year to say, “Thank You” and celebrate our donors from 2018-19.

I truly appreciate all the generosity you all showed me in my first year, both with the time you took to engage with me and the gifts you all made to ensure my first year would be a success. I look forward to reporting to you in more detail in the Annual Report, but in the meantime, thank you for your support, generosity, and partnership.

Warm Regards,

Kim Ridley

Laptop Program

Fayerweather’s laptop program began as a pilot initiative during the 2018-2019 school year. It was initially rolled out for grades seven and eight. This program aimed at solving a range of technology problems in the classroom, such as:

  • Lack of device availability
  • Costly upkeep and maintenance of older Windows devices
  • Older, inefficient computers slowed down the pace of learning
  • Equity issues - some homes had top-of-the-line computers for every family member while others had an older desktop shared by whole family

All of the seventh and eighth grade students received a Chromebook. These devices were used on a day to day basis by the students and were brought home at the end of the school day so students could work on homework. Giving each student a device helped teach responsibility and internet safety. Metrics gathered from the devices in Spring 2019 showed that the top sites visited by students were Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Gmail; clearly our students were highly focused on their academics.

Based on the positive feedback from the first year, the laptop program has been expanded to grades five and six for the 2019-2020 academic year. Grades five and six have access to their own Chromebooks during the school day, however students do not take them home at the end of the day. Additionally, outdated PC computers in grades three and four have been updated to Chromebooks; this brings the total device count to 130 Chromebooks. These technological advancements were made possible by contributions to the FSS Annual Fund.

Unit Fitness

For the 2019-2020 academic year, our Unit students’ schedule has been adjusted to beginning their day with fitness. The Unit Fitness program expands our definition of physical fitness to include knowledge of team sports, strength and conditioning, and mind/body connection through the practice of yoga. The three goals of this pilot program are:

  • Start the students’ day with physical fitness to increase focus, energy and productivity as they begin their academic program
  • Broaden the students’ view of physical fitness
  • Increase the amount of time the students are physically active

Unit students participate in all three classes, three times throughout the year.

Yoga

Yoga teaches body awareness and the connection between thoughts, emotions, and physical state. Students explore the history of yoga by learning basic shapes and breath work techniques that overlap in a variety of yoga lineages. Students also learn to use the tools that are most helpful for the modern teen. An important goal of this yoga class is to provide an opportunity for students to be curious and open to new forms of movement and find connections between themselves and the community around them.

Movement and Strength

Movement and Strength is designed to work all muscle groups with an emphasis on building strength and conditioning. Students are exposed to different styles of strength training such as obstacle courses, circuit training, and speed and agility workouts, all with the specific mission to engage the muscles and challenge students in a safe and fun way. The Movement portion of the class addresses the range of motion of the human body. Along with building strength and analyzing movement, the class spends time learning and understanding how the muscular system operates.

Team Sports

Team Sports classes work towards the refinement of individual skills used in the performance of games and sports. For each unit there are warm-up activities, lead-up games, fitness related skills, and specific skill development. Students participate in games and tournaments throughout the year, while exercising leadership roles by learning referee skills, applying game strategies, and studying the rules of each sport. Students play soccer, kickball, floor hockey, basketball, touch football, volleyball, baseball, and use the climbing wall.
