Content Info For The Week

Math (Carver, Beasley and Meeks): Students will begin generating their interactive notebook for math (composition book). We will review rational number operations and solving equations. There will not be any homework this week from the math team.

Algebra I (Meeks): Students will begin generating their interactive notebook for math (composition book). We will review rational number operations and solving equations. By the end of the week, we should begin the equations challenge. There will not be any homework this week from the math team.

Read 180 (Styron and Barker): Students will continue to explore the READ180 program and begin the process of transitioning from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. Additionally, students will use formal and informal English appropriately, take notes in order to identify the most important steps in a process, preview texts to build background and knowledge about content area topics, develop goals and list strategies for accomplishing them, and organize and write self-reflective statements using supporting details.

ELA (MacArthur and Lee): Last week, students began identifying themes and main idea from a text. We will continue to work on these skills this week, but we will introduce aspects of academic language such as imagery. Additionally, we will begin working on plot analysis. By the end of the week, students should be able to identify all key components that make up the plot for a story.

9th Grade Lit (Lee): This week in Mrs. Lee's class, students will begin an in-depth analysis of Greek Mythology in preparation for our Unit #1 text The Odyssey. Students will also continue to do close readings and annotations of various texts for theme, direct/indirect characterization, and types of conflict.

Science (Winkworth and Herndon): The central focus of this learning segment is to develop the understanding of Potential and Kinetic Energy and how they change from one form to another. This is the basic idea of conservation of energy, energy cannot be created or destroyed; it only changes from one form to another. Potential Energy is stored energy, the potential to release energy. Kinetic Energy is the energy of movement. If something is moving then it has kinetic energy. All other forms of energy can be classified as either potential or kinetic. When a person draws an arrow back on a bow, they are using kinetic energy and transferring it to the bow. When you draw the bowstring tight, it is gaining potential energy from the kinetic energy of your arm. When you release the bowstring, the potential energy transfers to the arrow making it fly through the air, kinetic energy.

Social Studies (MacArthur and Collier): Last week students were introduced to sourcing and the use of primary sources in creating reliable secondary sources. This upcoming week the students will be introduced to the connecting themes of Social Studies. These themes are meant to help students draw deeper connections between the content and their daily lives!
