The process of scholars generating ideas, collaborating with their peers, and voting on their own #OneWord2020 to represent the Class of 2024 was an ELITE experience for our scholars. We are certain that each scholar will use each of these three themes to hold themselves ACCOUNTABLE for achieving their goals to show personal and academic GROWTH which will ultimately result in a SUCCESSFUL 2020!!!

What's Happening This Week in 8th Grade???

English Language Arts

  • Read 180 (Romberg/Durrence): In READ 180, we continue with Workshop 8- “Follow the Money.” In whole and small group, we will work on transitions, avoiding run-ons, how to create budgets, and take their End of Unit vocabulary test. In independent reading, scholars will read books on their Lexile level from the READ 180 library and complete reading logs. In APP, scholars will independently work on selected APP segments to close learning gaps and complete APP logs. Scholars should have completed a total of 4 segments, 4 novels, and 4 Ereads by Jan. 24th.
  • 8th Grade ELA (Hills): This week in 8th Grade ELA, scholars will finish their reading, writing, and vocabulary tasks over the mystery, "The Tell Tale Heart" and begin preparing for their in-class mock trial over a major theme in the story. Lastly, on the block days this week, scholars will be completing the Winter iReady Reading Assessment.
  • 9th Grade Lit & Comp (Hills/Romberg):Lit and Comp will work on Unit 3: Coming of Age. Scholars have been loaned copies of the novel Romeo and Juliet (R&J) to use for the unit. Scholars will also complete literary activities based on R&J including poem analysis, context clues and new vocabulary, and sonnet writing. Reading Guide 2 for R&J will be due on Monday, Jan. 27th. Scholars should be reading at home to complete their Reading Guides. Romeo and Juliet projects due Thursday, Feb. 27th

Science

  • 8th Grade Science (Herndon/Winkworth/Beasley/ Joyner):The central focus of this learning segment is to develop the understanding of Electromagnetic waves and their practical applications. Scholars will learn all the parts of the Electromagnetic Spectrum, their wavelengths, wave frequencies, and energy associated with those parts. They will research and develop an understanding of the different devices that use each part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum to affect their lives on a daily basis.
  • Herndon's Tutorial: Thursday's 3:35-4:30

Social Studies:

  • 8th Grade Georgia Studies (Sanchez/Styron/Beasley/Joyner):This week scholars will study Reconstruction. Scholars will discuss how the South was rebuilt physically, socially, economically, and politically after the Civil War was over. Topics will include the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, sharecropping, and plans from Congress and the President for re-entering the Union. Learning activities during station rotations will include a gallery walk, doodle notes, dominoes review and exploring a PBS website about the Jim Crow Laws of the New South.

Math

  • 8th Grade Math (Meeks/Carver/Beasley/ Durrence):Scholars will begin to explore, derive, and graph linear functions based on the information provide. Scholars will use coordinates, intercepts, and slope to complete the tasks this week.
  • Algebra 1 (Meeks):Scholars will use what they know about factoring quadratics to explore real world situations with finding area and perimeter. Scholars will also explore projectile motion situations.
  • Carver's Tutorial: Tuesday's 3:35-4:30
  • Meeks's Tutorial: Wednesday's 3:35-4:30... Please contact Ms. Meeks if a different day or time is needed.
