Highlight: Meet a Local Pre-School Teacher

Are you interested in becoming a pre-school teacher? Read about Porterville College Alumna, Erika Escudero's, educational journey on her path to teaching.

My name is Erika Escudero. My parents and I came to this country 25 years ago from Mexico. I have been married for many years and I also have two boys. My oldest son is 24 years old and graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Fresno State. He is now on his journey to find his dream job. My youngest son is 15 and is currently attending PHS (Porterville High School). As a Mother, I work so hard to be a good role model towards my kids. When I first came to this country I couldn’t read nor write English but, I was fortunate enough to be accepted to Porterville College around the time when my oldest son was three years old. I was a full-time student while being a mother and was also a part time employee at the PC Day care. While I was taking many classes, I had my oldest son enrolled at the PC Day care. Thanks to the amazing staff, great teachers and my family I was able to complete my AA in Child Development. Ever since then I have been working for schools for over 20 years. I am currently working for Porterville Unified School District as a Preschool Teacher for 9 ½ years and am currently attending Fresno Pacific University to obtain my Bachelor’s Degree, followed by my credentials. After I succeed, I want to be able to teach a higher grade at elementary to provide a better education for the students. I highly encourage anyone, even if you don’t know English well, age, race or gender to push yourselves to study and accomplish your dreams because if I did it, then you can conquer your dreams too!

Highlight: Meet a PC Professor

Hello! My name is Dr. Jonathan Hernandez “H”, and I was born and raised in Selma, CA. I attended Reedley College right after I graduated from Selma High School and proudly tell everyone that community college was one of the best decisions of my life. I like to share with others “that it is not where you start – it is where you finish!” I grew up in a home of educators and always envisioned that I would mirror what both of my parents did professionally working with children in the elementary/middle school lanes of academia. However, after my first semester of college was complete, I knew that I wanted to pursue becoming a college professor (specifically, a full-time community college professor). After I earned my AA at Reedley College in Communication Studies, I transferred to Fresno State University and earned my BA in Communication, as well as my MA in Communication years later. In May of 2020, I earned my Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Fresno State University. I am very proud to be a 3x Alumnus from California State University, Fresno. However, I did not accomplish this alone. If I could share some advice to future educators, it would be just that: build a network of all-star people around you throughout your educational and professional journey(s). Do not try to do everything by yourself. Secondly, just know that if you can give your very best (and consistently give your very best) to this profession, I can guarantee that you will experience satisfaction and success working each day. Lastly, give it your all each day but remember: “You cannot pour from an empty cup.” Therefore, learn to always protect your energy. Practice self-care. Your students deserve the best version of you…your family deserves the best version of YOU…YOU deserve the best version of you!
