2021 Virtual Economic Outlook Forum

The Economic Outlook Forum is an annual event where experts in areas of banking, finance, and academia discuss economic trends and forecasts for the year. This year, the event will be facilitated virtually on March 4th from 9:00am - 11:00am.

Outstanding Business Faculty

Dr. Kimberly Goodwin Appointed Director of Publications for the American Real Estate Society

The American Real Estate Society (ARES) has appointed Dr. Kimberly Goodwin, Director of the School of Finance and Professor at Southern Miss, to a five-year term as Director of Publications beginning this year.

ARES, at the forefront of global thought leadership in real estate and the largest association of real estate academics and industry researchers and thought leaders, enters its 37th year with more than 1,400 faculty, industry and student members.

As Publications Director, Dr. Goodwin will oversee the six scholarly journals published by the American Real Estate Society, including the Journal of Real Estate Research, Journal of Housing Research, Journal of Real Estate Portfolio Management, Journal of Real Estate Literature, Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education, and the Journal of Sustainable Real Estate.

“I am excited for the opportunity to influence thought leadership in such a meaningful way,” says Goodwin. “As Publications Director, I want to ensure that ARES continues to publish high quality research and that our authors attain the greatest reach and impact possible for their work.”

Dr. Chad Miller Serving as Interim Director of the Trent Lott National Center

Congratulations to Dr. Chad Miller, Professor of Economic Development and Program Coordinator for the Master of Science in Economic Development, for being selected to serve as interim Director of the Trent Lott National Center. As Dr. Shannon Campbell transitions into a new role as the Senior Associate Vice President for Coastal Operations, Miller will temporarily hold the title while USM conducts a search for a new director. The director will administer economic impact studies, create strategic partnerships, and connect business and industry with expertise offered by the University.

Southern Miss Business Student Honored with the Prestigious General George C. Marshall Award

Congratulations to Southern Miss student-veteran Cadet Ryan Dean for being selected as a U.S. Army General George C. Marshall Award winner! He is being recognized as the top USM Army ROTC cadet within the class of 2021. Dean is a military veteran, member of the Mississippi Army National Guard, and Army ROTC cadet majoring in business management. He maintains an overall 3.8 grade point average while working as a VA work-study employee, and caring for his family of four.

While attending USM over the past few years, Dean dedicated all his academic efforts to not only learning business management, but also earning a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In doing so, he was also selected to serve as the USM Army ROTC Corps of Cadets Command Sergeant Major.

Southern Miss Business Graduates Continuing Education

Haimanti Ghosh | MBA Graduate | 2018

Haimanti completed her MBA here at Southern Miss in the Summer of 2018 and has recently been accepted into the Texas Tech Ph.D. program in Business Administration with a concentration in Management.

Cole Engle | BSBA Accounting |May 2020

Within ten days of submitting his application, Cole was accepted into the Duke University School of Law. He will begin in August 2021.

Lacey Wallace | MBA | May 2021

Lacey currently serves as a graduate assistant pursuing her MBA and is expected to graduate this May. She has been accepted into the Marketing Ph.D. program at The University of Alabama and will begin in August 2021.

Sport management students connect with Baylor Associate Athletic Director

Mr. Drew Pittman, Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Events at Baylor University and one of the leading risk and security management practitioners in the United States, visited students in the Sport Event and Facilities (SM 642) course, taught by Dr. John Miller. Topics discussed included managing the risks of conducting intercollegiate sports events during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Pittman highlighted the importance of communication and collaboration with others in intercollegiate and professional athletics to ensure the safety of spectators, game personnel, players, and coaches. While he could not categorically state that attendance would increase at games this fall, he exhibited optimism. The opportunity for the students to ask Mr. Pittman questions about the field of sport event and facility management provided them insights and a chance to network with a highly regarded practitioner, which is part of the mission of the College of Business and Economic Development.

Zoetis Representatives visit Professional sales class

Lindsey Cockrell, Senior Territory Manager with Zoetis, served as a virtual guest speaker in the Advanced Professional Sales course taught by Chris Balaski. This is her 4th time working with the class.

During her presentation, she provided background on the organization, which is considered the largest global animal health company. She touched on the Animal Health industry, discussed a "day in the life" of her position, and shared stories of her career path. She also reviewed the science behind the product Convenia (cefovecin sodium) and how she sells it to her accounts. The students were then tasked with selling Convenia to an "imaginary veterinary clinic" as part of their first graded role play exercise. The role plays will be recorded for grading and feedback.

Lorraine Reynolds, Customer Engagement Manager from Zoetis, assisted in a one-on-one, virtual role play exercise with student Cody Crosby and provided valuable feedback to perfect his pitch.

Importance of Networking

Chad Newell, President of the Area Development Partnership (ADP) spoke on the importance of networking as part of a series the School of Marketing is hosting called "Professional Polish". With a total of 83 attendees, students had a choice of attending in-person or virtually.

Hunter Easterling has been appointed the 2021 Chair for the Coast Young Professionals. Hunter graduated from Southern Miss with his BSBA in Finance in 2015 and is now the owner of and licensed agent at Southern Insurance Professionals, LLC. Southern Insurance Professionals is a Mississippi retail insurance agency that prides itself on delivering quality insurance products at competitive prices; while also maintaining top notch customer service.
