ANDREA FRECKMANN & PETER VOS pAINtinGS, THREE DIMENSIONAL WORK

In the exhibition, the work of Andrea Freckman (1970) and Peter Vos (1975) act as a counterweight to each other. The clearly defined geometric shapes of Peter Vos' animals complement Andrea Freckmann's theatrical compositions. The combination of the stylized pieces of the former and the expressive brushstrokes of the latter, invite the viewer to an experience between the two contrasting creative approaches.

Peter Vos, Girl with Hawk, 2020, oil paint on linen, 140 x 80 cm € 8.750,-

Recently, Peter Vos began a series of paintings of young women holding a bird. Their appearance and expression varies from soft and dreamy to harsh and alert. In this piece, he portrays a young woman gazing profoundly at a hawk. The geometric, abstract shapes constituting her garment accentuate the flatness of the composition, and are reminiscent of the Japanese woodblock prints that influenced the late nineteenth and early twentieth century avant-gardes.

SECOND ROOM

Andrea Freckmann, 'Rekwisiet' (Prop), 2020, oil paint on plaster, 45 x 20 x 22 cm € 1.300,-

Andrea Freckmann, Untitled (Teppichbilder), 2019, oil paint on linen, 160 x 170 cm, sold

Despite the fact that some motifs are immediately recognizable, Andrea Freckmann's paintings also contain a certain level of abstraction. By isolating the pattern of a Persian rug, or depicting a carpeted and furnished room from above, the shapes become more autonomous and abstract. In this piece, Freckmann combines her preference for ornament with some everyday objects. The result is a multilayered composition with a bold placement of forms in space.

Peter Vos, 'Bird of Paradise', 2019, oil paint on linen, 68 x 56 cm sold
Peter Vos, 'Owlet', 2020, oil paint on linen, 40 x 36 cm € 2.600, -
Peter Vos, 'Tigermoth', 2019, oil paint on linen, 120 x 90 cm € 6.250,-

THIRD ROOM

Peter Vos, 'Girl with Jackdaw', 2020, oil paint on linen, 120 x 60 cm sold

Peter Vos, Pelican with Chick, 2020, oil paint on linen, 90 x 80 cm. € 5.700, -

Geometric stylization is a common feature in the work of Peter Vos. His animals are sheltered by symmetric spatial composition, and enclosed by the ordered lines defining their form. In this piece, the body of a large pelican bounds the body of its chick, simultaneously determing its shape and emphasizing the flat surface activity. Despite their evident stylization, Peter Vos' animals maintain an individual character that facilitates identification with certain human traits, in this case motherly affection.

Peter Vos, 'Girl with Blackbird', 2020, oil paint on linen, 100 x 90 cm € 7.250, -
Andrea Freckmann, untitled (Teppichbilder), 2020, oil paint on linen, 80 x 90 cm € 2.500, -

Andrea Freckmann, A Painter's Play, 2019, oil paint on linen, 160 x 180 cm. € 5.250, -

Andrea Freckmann often mixes interior and exterior spaces. In A Painter's Play, the houses in a dune landscape are combined with the domestic furniture on the painting's frontal plane. The formal buildup of the piece, divided in rectangular planes, as well as the blend of textures and foregrounded objects, results in a pictorial puzzle with theatrical character. By portraying items from her immediate environment, the artist puts her life on stage, thematizing her everyday existence.

FOURTH ROOM

Andrea Freckmann, 'Prolog auf dem Theater (Gastspiel)', 2019, oil paint on linen, 160 x 180 cm € 5.250,-
Peter Vos, 'Hornbill', 2020, oil paint on linen, 53 x 80 cm € 4.250,-
Peter Vos, 'Marabu', 2020, oil paint on linen, 120 x 100 cm € 7.000,-
Peter Vos, 'Stork Chick', 2019, oil paint on linen, 52 x 38 cm € 3.100,-
Peter Vos, 'Flamingo Chick' , 2019, oil paint on linen, 40 x 30 cm sold
Andrea Freckmann, untitled (vase), 2020, oil paint on linen, 30 x 25 cm sold

Andrea Freckmann, Epilogue, 2020, oil paint on linen, 160 x 180 cm € 5.250,-

Last summer, Andrea Freckmann exhibited at Schloss Agathenburg in Germany. The site's castle is depicted in the background of Epilogue, behind a dancing couple. Many details accentuate the mysterious, dream-like atmosphere of the scene. Such is the case of the woman's garments: a combination of an old fashioned ball gown and a dog mask. Likewise, although they are in an exterior space, a chandelier swings above them, hovering over an unidentified brown shadow.

FIFTH ROOM

Andrea Freckmann, untitled (Teppichbilder), 2020, oil paint on linen, 50 x 60 cm, sold.
Andrea Freckmann, untitled (Teppichbilder), 2020, oil paint on linen, 80 x 90 cm € 2.500,-

Peter Vos, Tigermoth, 2019, oil paint on linen, 120 x 90 cm. € 6.250,-

In Tigermoth, Peter Vos isolates the animal shape against a neutral backround. The strong contrast between the colours that make up the wings, and the clarity with which the outline is defined, add a slight industrial tone to the biological representation of the insect. This is further asserted in the symmetry of the composition and the moth's sense of immobility.

Andrea Freckmann, untitled (woman and dog), 2020, oil paint on linen, 30 x 25 cm, € 925,-
