Sometimes when I am bored, I play on Google Maps looking for interesting features in the landscape that I hadn't noticed before. One day, I noticed, holy man, there is a little lake right by Long Point. I wonder what it's like? We packed up the truck with our camping gear, kayaks and bikes and set off to the park. What did we find when we got there? Possibly my favourite family park in South Western Ontario.
Launch Site: The lake is surrounded by a cute little Conservation Area. It is exceptionally well kept and unbelievably clean. The address is 1929 Norfolk County Rd 45, Langton, ON N0E 1G0
Difficulty: This is as protected as water gets. It is shielded from wind on all sides by the embankments and the trees. This place is perfect for a family trip or to practice skills in flat water.
Trip Length: If you handrail the coastline, you can stretch the trip to a very respectable 8km. With all of the pictures you will surely want to take and the people who stop you to chat, this trip took about 3 hours.
While I was kayaking through the park, I kept thinking, this must be what this region looked like before it was converted to farmland at the turn of the century. THe lake is surrounded by Carolinian forest on all sides. I bet the views are spectacular in the fall.
Cost: Here is a breakdown of the costs. Its a bit more pricey than the other trips, but it is very worth the money. The park has camping, day use facilities and sells snacks and fire wood.
