A lot of David Lachapelle’s photography have sensitive themes and ideas presented. He pushes boundaries by making religion and nudity a very common theme in his photos. What some would see as offensive at the time is now something that inspires other photographers to do more provocative work. Lachapelle was trying to show people that even things that some would find gross (nosebleeds, crying, close up nudity, etc.) can be beautifully portrayed. For the first photo, I had my friend lay down on my carpet in place of the background. I tried my best for her to have the same facial expression as the woman in photo. We had to use a flag in place of a rose because I didn’t have any flowers in my house. I liked the way the second photo turned out the best. I think the makeup turned out pretty similar and the background is similar besides the color. Her hair looks a little different but I think we did a good job of capturing the essence of the photo. For my last image I had my friend pose in my bathroom because it had good lighting. I had to improvise with makeup because I didn’t have the same materials as Lachapelle did. We put up a blue towel as a background in place of what Lachapelle used for the Kim Kardashian picture. I think David Lachapelle has become one of my new favorite photographers throughout learning about him. I love the way he uses bright colors and creative makeup looks to express his unique style. I think in the future I will try to be more experimental with my photos.
In this photo I used the technique, dappled light. The rule of thirds is also a present theme in this photo. I really liked the way this photo turned out.
I think that some people believe that I only spend time with my friends because a lot of the time I’m with them. I actually am very close with my family and we spend a lot of time together. This is more of candid shot of my mom, my sister, and I.
When the topic of experience was brought up as a part of the final I knew exactly what I wanted to do. The day before we were given this assignment my friend asked me to try and learn how to skateboard with her. She gave me her extra board and I asked her to come over after school to shoot photos. She is a little more advanced than me on the tricks but I’m still learning. I tried to use the settings on my camera (I used my own camera) to capture my friend in the air while she was doing tricks and she got down on her stomach to capture me going down the hill. This was a really fun experience, I’m going to keep trying to learn how to skateboard and take photos of it.
These were some of my favorite shots I have taken during the photography course. The photos expressed my creativity and my unique take on the assignments. This course inspired me to continue photography outside of the classroom. I got my own camera and will continue to take photos of people, places, and things.
