Fashion Week Struts Into New York By: nicky brown

New York City of one of the four fashion capitals of the world, acting as the fashion capital of the United States. Twice a year, American designers present their newest collections in a week of shows held in New York. Here were three shows that stood out to me.

First, Fenty x Puma by Rihanna. The singer’s collaboration with athletic brand Puma, made its debut in New York after two seasons of being shown in Pairs. The show incorporated moto vibes with biker shorts and bright neon colors. “The collection itself was partly X Games inspired, with a number of classic surf references thrown in for good measure. [...] there were modern iterations of cheeky 1980s swim trends, including the French-cut swimsuit, which has arguably been a hot-button topic on beaches all over the land this summer,” Vogue Magazine said. Rihanna incorporated her over the top personality, as the extravagant show was opened with mountains of pink sand being rode by professional motorcyclists. Upcoming model Kaia Gerber, 16 could be seen strutting down the runway in a matching blue set.

Second, Ralph Lauren. The iconic American brand, best known for their polo shirts, decided to veer off the traditional show venue. Instead, they held the show in Lauren’s garage in Bedford, New York. The designs mostly consisted of reds, blacks, yellows and blues, which perfectly matched the many luxurious cars that lined the runway. The simple yet timeless designs proved that sometimes, classic is better. “Recently, over the top designs seem to be popular, but I prefer more simplistic styles.” Isabel Handa ’19 said. Top notch model, Bella Hadid walked, as well as Kendall Jenner, who was recently named Fashion Icon of the Decade.

Lastly, Marc Jacobs. While most shows are accommodated with upbeat music for the models to walk to, the Marc Jacobs show was completely silent. Florals, fanny packs and sequins were three themes that could not be missed from the designs. “Everything on the designer's runway was exaggerated to the nth degree — proportion, color, prints and juxtaposition.” Women’s Wear Daily reported. Each model was also accessorized with a different color head wrap. The silence of the show was broken during the finale, as all of the models walked out. Gigi Hadid and Winnie Harlow were just two of the many models who presented Jacob’s designs down the runway.

Fashion week is always an exciting time for designers because they get to show new and innovative designs. Each of these three designers brought their own twist to the event, pairing perfectly with their newest collections.
