Dear University community,

  • Perhaps at no other time has a timely exploration of immigration and the hardships immigrants face been so important. I encourage you to attend this Wednesday’s IBC Bank and Commerce Bank 2021-2022 Keynote Speaker Series at 3 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
  • Admission is free and open to the public. Former refugee and naturalized American Roya Hakakian will focus on the immigrant narrative. She’ll reveal what native-born Americans take for granted about their own country during a lecture titled, “A Beginner’s Guide to America for the Immigrant and Curious.”
  • World Teachers Day was celebrated by our College of Education in a big, global way with our partners around the world. See our Gallery below, including an Instagram highlight reel.
  • Last week, our Fall University Convocation recognized some stellar faculty and community members. Please extend your congratulations to faculty members Dr. Jared R. Dmello, Dr. Hayley D. Kazen, Dr. Fei Luo, Dr. Deepak Ganta, and Dr. Lola Norris, who received 2021 Awards. We also recognized The Guadalupe and Lilia Martínez Foundation Trustees Bob and Shirley González with our Innovador Award.
  • Hispanic Heritage Month continues! On Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 12 – 1 p.m., go to Dusty's Diner for the SOLE Talks presentation, "Latino Representation in Marvel Comics and Film." It’s open to students only.
  • On Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m., a lecture features two accomplished TAMIU professors, Dr. Irma Cantú, and Dr. Abigail Meert, who will speak about "Women in the Developing World” as part of the "Diverse Cultures, Diverse Humanities" Lecture Series.   • While you’re at it, meet University administrator and TAMIU Ballet Folklórico champion Nayeli Lopez to find out more about TAMIU’s diverse tapestry.
  • Who’d like a free book? In celebration of the UNESCO-designated World Teacher's Day, TAMIU’s College of Education's faculty, students and alumni program, POSSE, will present a book giveaway Saturday, Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Outlet Shoppes at Laredo located at 1600 Water St.
  • Professional Opportunities Supporting/Synergizing Scholarly Engagement (POSSE) members will distribute hundreds of books free…including storybooks, textbooks, reference books, literature and history books, written in English and Spanish, for all ages.
  • Are you ready to “Make A Difference”? We’ve got a Day for you to do just that…Make a Difference Day is Saturday, Oct. 23. That’s when TAMIU students, faculty, and staff will join from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., focusing on the beautification of the Las Palmas Trail. You can sign up here now.

  • TAMIU faculty, staff, students, and the public can still access National Guard-administered COVID-19 vaccines through the end of November 2021. We appreciate their partnership and support.
  • TAMIU’s random COVID-19 testing is underway. If selected, you must test within 72 hours. Testing is for ALL members of the University community: students, faculty, and staff. That’s all of us…because all of us are in this together!
  • If selected, an email will land in your official TAMIU email account. Testing is at no cost to you and here on campus. We are committed to protecting what matters: you and yours. Please share our commitment.

TAMIU Names Recipients of Faculty, Community Awards 

The Fall University Convocation recognized stellar faculty and community partners in a ceremony at the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Tom Mitchell, presented the 2021 Awards to University faculty while University President Pablo Arenaz presented the Senator Judith Zaffirini Leadership Medal Award, the Innovador Award, and delivered the University’s annual State of the University message.

The University’s Innovador Award was created in 2019 to recognize an individual or organization making a lasting impact on education, particularly higher education in Laredo and the south Texas region.

This year’s Innovador Award was presented to The Guadalupe and Lilia Martínez Foundation Trustees Bob and Shirley González.

Acclaimed Journalist, Author Looks at Immigrant Experience for IBC Bank and Commerce Bank Keynote Speaker Series Wednesday

"A Beginner’s Guide to America for the Immigrant and Curious”

Immigration and the hardships faced by resettling in America is the upcoming topic of discussion during the next TAMIU IBC Bank and Commerce Bank 2021-2022 Keynote Speaker Series offering Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public. In addition to the in-person lecture, a live broadcast will be available via WebEx Events.

In celebration of the UNESCO-designated World Teacher's Day, College of Education's faculty, students and alumni program, POSSE, is presenting a book giveaway Saturday, Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Outlet Shoppes at Laredo located at 1600 Water St.

TAMIU Hispanic Heritage Month Activities Continue

TAMIU continues its month-long observance of Hispanic Heritage Month with a broad range of engaging lectures, presentations and activities. Anchoring the calendar of activities during Hispanic Heritage Month is the launch of TAMIU's first-ever "Diverse Cultures, Diverse Humanities" Lecture Series, funded by a Humanities Texas grant. Presented virtually, the lectures are designed to bridge diversity and inclusion topics with the Humanities.

About Our Presenters:

Dr. Irma Cantú is an associate professor of Mexican and Colonial literature. She has published numerous articles and essays on travel writing and Orientalism in journals in the United States, Mexico, and Europe. She has contributed to several volumes of literary and cultural criticism.

Dr. Abigail Meert is an assistant professor of History at TAMIU. Her research focuses on the study of conflict and society in East Africa, looking specifically at how East African political leaders have constructed and asserted their legitimacy since independence. She received her Ph.D. in History from Emory University in 2019.

On Saturday, Oct. 23, students, faculty, and staff will work to create a lasting impact in their local community as part of Make a Difference Day 2021. Volunteers will spend their Saturday morning, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., focusing on the beautification of the Las Palmas Trail.
