WHAT HAPPENED:
The girls rugby team fell to Sparta-Rock (a union between Sparta High School and Rockford High School) with a final score of 74-3 in their first game on Thursday, Sept. 30. With early defensive trouble in the first half, the Bucs rallied in the second, only allowing five points in the last 15 minutes.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN:
The team’s record falls to 0-1 on the season as the Bucs continue to look for their first win of the year.
KEY PLAYERS:
- Junior Captain Avery O'Brien led the Bucs defense in the second half. The Bucs gave up 26 points in the second half, which was roughly half the points scored in the first. "After half time the switch flipped and everything clicked,” O’Brien said. “It was almost a completely different game."
- Senior Captain Hannah Haughtaling kicked a drop goal to give the Bucs points in the second half.
THEY SAID IT:
- "All the vets, they're keeping their heads up, they're trying to keep all the rookies heads up. We're doing pretty good as long as we keep hyping everyone up, then they will want to progress and will want to get better." Haughtaling said," I'm so proud of my team I couldn't be any more proud of them."
- "We have a brand new team," Coach Tom Foley said, "You could see through the game that as the game went on the understanding of the flow of the game, and the physicality of the game picked up whereby the time we got to the end of the game, it was almost an evenly balanced game."

The girls rugby team will take on Berkley at home on Sunday, Oct 10.
