BSU Graduate Students Present Fisheries Research in Wisconsin Four BSU biology students were among more than 1,000 students and working professionals attending the Midwest Fish & Wildlife Conference in Milwaukee

Four Bemidji State University graduate biology students presented at the 78th Midwest Fish & Wildlife Conference, "Strengthening Natural Resources Through Collaboration," Jan. 28–31 in Milwaukee, Wis. More than 1,000 biologists and students from state federal, and tribal natural resources agencies from the Midwest, Great Plains, Rocky Mountains and Canadian provinces were in attendance.

BSU students had the opportunity to share their individual research projects through oral presentations.

"Effect of Beaver on Brook Trout Habitat in North Shore, Lake Superior Streams," presented by Katti Renik.

Renik, graduate student from Hazelhurst, Wis., was one of 12 finalists for the Janice Lee Fenske Memorial Award for Outstanding Students. The award gives recognition to students' achievements in fisheries management during the conference.

Phil Oswald, biology graduate student from Duluth, Minn., presented "Assessment of Walleye Reproduction Success in the Tamarac River, Minn."

The conference included 400 technical presentations, poster displays, plenary sessions, networking opportunities and social events for the students to experience.

Bemidji, Minn., resident Heather Marjamaa presented "Assessing the Dispersal of Stocked Walleye Fry in a Northern Minnesota Chain of Lakes."

Steve Hauschildt, graduate student from Bemidji, Minn., presented "Variability in Spatial Distribution of Larval Yellow Perch in a Northern Lake Ecosystem."

"The Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference allowed us to gain valuable insight into research being performed in our field, and to network with individuals from many different organizations and agencies," Renik said.

Renik (front row, third from right) was one of 12 student presenters who received the conference's Janice Lee Fenske Memorial Award for Outstanding Students award.
