COVID-19 Update

Association Policy from 28 March 2020 and supersedes previous policies.

COVID-19 Pandemic - Coronavirus

Judo Queensland’s highest priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of members and our community. COVID-19 is impacting the globe, its economy and it may be a life-changing event for many of us. Already there have been unprecedented closures of borders, businesses, sports facilities and cancellation of all events including the Tokyo Olympics. The World Health Organisation and government health authorities are providing the best information which everyone should use to take responsible action to halt the spread of this exceptionally infectious virus.

Immediately, we encourage every judo player and their family and friends to follow and exceed the Federal and State Government requirements for ensuring physical distance between ourselves and others. Judo Queensland is participating in regular Queensland Government briefings and information exchanges, and discussions with Judo Australia. These will inform ours’ and the Queensland Government’s responses. We are encouraged by the Queensland Government’s assurances through sports Minister De Brenni and his head of division Andrew Sly that it will do all in its’ power to help the sports industry survive the financial and employment impacts, and then rebound when possible. To be healthy, Queenslanders should always be physically active but for now, it must be strictly in isolation.

Judo Queensland’s first actions to maintain and support our community’s cohesion are:

1. Maintain our dialogue with members.

2. We ask club members to stay in regular contact with club-mates as well as start reaching-out to those you don’t know well, and actively support each other’s wellbeing.

3. Extend all individual Judo Queensland memberships until after we start judo activities again.

  • Judo Australia will support this membership extension, with details to be clarified as we go.
  • State Government and Judo Queensland request: That all affiliated clubs either extend or waive club fees for at least the length of time that your members could not train.
  • Our shared policy intent across national, state and club levels is: ‘financial or other hardship should not stop anyone playing judo.’ We must find a way to help anyone who wants to do judo to be able to participate. This is the judo ‘way’ and this reflects the community-building values of judo.
  • The length of membership extension by Judo Queensland will be clarified when normal judo resumes.
  • We will also provide an incentive for new memberships and announce this in time for clubs to start their local marketing campaigns for the rebound.

4. Strengthen communication, and communication-systems, within our network of committees and clubs.

5. Refocus the board’s work on building systems and procedures to improve the member’s and volunteer’s judo experiences.

6. Re-work our plans for the new situation. We will be ready to enliven our sport when we get the chance. This includes a new calendar of competitions ready to go, once we get the signal: ‘good to go’.

7. Ask every member to check our web site and social media channels for news, activities which can be done in isolation, and sources of important information.

Club News

Isshindokan Judo Club

Thank you to Michael Hill, the Hill family, and Isshindokan Judo Club volunteers, for the tireless effort put into the Isshindokan Competition first weekend in March, over 180 entrants and many entering in double divisions, some amazing Judo on the day. This competition coincided with International Womens day, Meladee Stackpoole called for every woman on the mat, Judoka, Mum's Gradma's Coaches, and we took a photo. A huge thank you to all Referees, volunteers, and supporters for your support at this well run event on our Judo Calendar.

Innisfail Judo Club

On the weekend of 14th/15th March a training camp was held, with Coaches Sensie Yuki Uemera's guidance, Megumi Hamashima, and Sensei Handa. 2 x 3 hour Judo sessions were held, the focus on the Judo sessions were Kuzushi (breaking balance), and how to throw with heart and get the Ippon. Much knowledge was gained by all that attended. All food was provided at the camp for Coaches, and athletes.

Sunday the Innisfail Open began entry numbers were down due to COVID-19 however this did not dampen the ever present Innisfail Judo Spirit - 80 entries were received, and many entering in double divisions. Again without volunteers these amazing events do not happen. Congratulations and thank you to Innisfail Judo Club Referees, Bout Control all Volunteers and expert coaching team. Many Judo Clubs traveled for this event.
