Home Free Brings a Mix of Country and Acapella to Boston on the “Dive Bar Saints” World Tour By: Katerina Gebhardt

Country music is an American classic, and iterations of this genre range from rock and roll style to rap. However, one group has found their own unique niche in the country music industry, combining the sweet sounds of country with acapella harmony. Home Free, an acapella group consisting of Austin Brown, Rob Lundquist, Adam Rupp, Tim Foust and Adam Chance, have put their own spin on such a quintessential genre, and with the release of their new album “Dive Bar Saints,” have started their first ever world tour, traveling all across the US and Europe. The “Dive Bar Saints” Tour brought good old country harmony to New England, and while the concert lacked personal feeling from the band, Home Free’s energy, humor and outstanding skill have made their performance one to remember.

From the very beginning of the concert, it was evident that Home Free had never performed in New England before, and they seemed a bit awkward and unsure of how the crowd would react. The band made a few jokes at the expense of New Hampshire, but beyond that, they did not seem to relate to the crowd as much as they might an audience down south, where they have a significantly larger fan base. However, as the night progressed, Home Free found their stride and interacted a lot more with the crowd.

Despite their unfamiliarity with the crowd, Home Free maintained a great sense of energy throughout the entire performance. After their opening number, the band announced that they did not just want it to be a concert; they wanted it to be a party, and their enthusiasm certainly reflected it. Additionally, Home Free’s sense of humor brought them closer to the audience and greatly contributed to both the energy of the crowd and the band. Bassit Tim Foust did most of the talking for the group, cracking jokes about both his fellow bandmates and the crowd. The small venue of Lynn Auditorium helped them maintain this energy and made the concert more personal, and it was obvious that the band prefers this kind of personal concert than one at a large venue such as TD Garden.

Of course, the exemplary skill of this acapella band made the concert all the more memorable, with amazing performances from Foust and beatboxer Adam Rupp often stealing the show.

Foust is arguably one of the best bassists in the music industry, and his deep, rich voice adds a depth to Home Free’s music that is often lacking in other acapella bands. One felt Foust’s lowest notes rather than heard them, and there were a few points where he came close to blowing out the speakers. Foust was a crowd favorite, and it was not hard to see why: his skill as a bassist is almost unparalleled and absolutely mindblowing.

Additionally, Rupp shone throughout the show for his mastery and dexterity as Home Free’s beatboxer. At many points, it was hard to tell that it was actually a human making all of the drum, synth and even harmonica noises. In the second half of the show, Rupp was given a long solo for him to show off every trick in his book, and he absolutely blew the audience away. After a particularly impressive tune of beats and synth notes, Rupp paused and lightheartedly told the crowd, “your turn,” before launching back into another round of beats.

It is not often that Home Free makes its way so far north, but when they do, they are truly amazing to watch and hear. Through their tremendous energy, sense of humor and mind blowing skill, Home Free’s “Dive Bar Saints” tour performance was one to remember.
