Through a juried process, I have been selected by the Dougherty Arts Center of Austin's Museums & Cultural Programs to participate in a new program, ArtsResponders: Social Practice Responds to COVID-19, and commissioned to train in social practice and engage the community in an artistic response to cope with and overcome COVID-19. As a result, I am launching a public art project titled ESSENTIALS!

In Spring 2020, Austin Mayor Adler’s shelter-in-place order called for citizens to self-isolate, all citizens except those doing specific, identified essential work. Many of these workers are women who risk their own safety and health to support the immediate needs of the community. In return we must also support them.

"We are wearing masks, not just for ourselves, but for everybody else. As medical providers, we just want to help." —Casey, Basic-Paramedic Austin, Travis County EMS

CELEBRATE OUR ESSENTIAL WOMEN WORKERS! I am calling on you Austin, to nominate your loved one and encourage the nominations of ALL women including gender-fluid/non-binary and trans women in essential service. Family, friends, and coworkers are invited to submit a description and a photo, telling me about these important people, whether in food service, the medical field, poll workers….this list could go on and on!

Images and quotes from submissions will be honored and published on social media. Some selected submissions will be photographed by me during a socially distanced portrait session and their images used in a large-scale public art project!
