Common Name: Hens and Chicks

Family: Crassulaceae, Orpine

Habit: Hardy, evergreen succulent.

Growth Form: Plant is comprised of rosettes of succulent leaves. The rosettes produce runners of smaller rosettes which are referred as "chicks". Moderate growth rate.

Mature Size: Height: 3-4" Width: 4-12"

Flowers: Purple red on hairy stems 12" above rosettes. Summer bloom.

Hardiness: Zones 3-8

Sun Requirements: Full Sun, tolerate part shade.

Water Requirements: Water regularly for a few weeks until established. Requires very little care and is very drought tolerant.

Soil Requirements: Well drained, dry soil. Plant in dry, sandy soil. Prefer poor, rocky or gravelly soil.

Other Info: Parent of many hybrids. Large and open rosettes, hairy flower stem to 12" tall, thick leaves with dark tips. Landscape habit uses: Rock gardens, dry wall, edging, bedding in dry gardens, containers such as strawberry jar.
