November Artist of the Month: Smera Gora Walpole High's music student transferring talents to social media

For the month of November, staff at The Rebellion chose senior Smera Gora to be named the "Artist of the Month." Gora has exceptional talents and incredible drive to be successful, between learning and mastering two instruments and effectively demonstrating these talents daily through practice with fellow bandmates. Gora has been successful in both inspiring and entertaining others through her journey as a band student.

In sixth grade, Gora began her journey into the world of band. First she picked up the flute, playing and performing all three years of middle school and carrying the instrument with her as she ventured into high school. Once she reached the summer of sophomore year, Gora decided to take on the piccolo, and she has since continued to play both instruments and further her talents. In junior year, Gora joined Walpole High’s marching band, where she marched at football games and at the Santa Parade.

To express her interest and display her talents, Gora started posting videos of her playing her instruments on instagram. Soon after, Gora decided to start a new account (smera.gclef) dedicated to her covers. “I started playing my music and recording myself. I put it on my main, and I was uploading so much I decided to delete them and transfer them to an account dedicated for music. Also, I wanted others to listen to my music, so I made a new public account,”Gora said.

On her account, Gora makes covers of mostly classical music, her favorite genre. “My favorite music is concert literature and full orchestra, so I really love classical music including Mozart and Ticheli,”Gora said. So far she has covered Mozart’s "Romanza," Vivaldi’s "Winter," and even the song "Reflection" from the Disney movie, "Mulan." Occasionally, Gora will post videos of her practicing with fellow band students in preparation for upcoming concerts and auditions. Two years ago, Gora got into the Southeastern Mass Bandmasters Association (SEMSBA), where music students have the opportunity to audition for a spot in their program where students play in an ensemble and play or sing challenging music with students from all over the south shore, led by a professional.

“It was a great experience because once you get accepted, for two days you get together with a conductor and everyone else who got accepted, and play music that was given to you if you make auditions,” Gora said. “I made a lot of friends and I learned a lot because before that I had only played with the school band.”

“Smera has been in the band for the past four years and has grown into a fine musician as well as leader in the group. She always comes to every rehearsal with a positive attitude which serves as a model for the other students. She is kind, caring and dedicated to her craft which is evident on how well she plays the flute,”Gora's band teacher, Kenneth Gable said.

Everyone has a niche, Gora’s just happens to be in the band room and in the bleachers with fellow bandmates. “I like the community and having a place where I can leave all my stress behind and have something to do,” Gora said.

On Dec. 6, 2018 Gora played both her flute and piccolo alongside members of Walpole High's band and chorus at their annual Winter Concert held at Walpole High School.
