OFFICIAL OPENING OF OUR PERMANENT MODULAR BUILDING The new Grade 5 and 6 classrooms will be officially opened on Wednesday, April 21 at 9.30am by Anthony Carbines, Member for Ivanhoe. There will be a whole school assembly (weather permitting) on the Tiger Turf, with the unveiling of a plaque to mark the occasion.
BADGE PRESENTATIONS Our final badge presentations took place at Assembly on Monday with our Japanese Captains and Green Team members all receiving their badges. We also had our first Citizen Of The Month presentation for 2021, for the value of Kindness. It was a busy but rewarding assembly!
SCHOOL COUNCIL School Council met briefly on Monday night to approve and endorse our Annual Report of 2020. It has now been uploaded to our website.
A CHILD IS BORN It gives us great pleasure to announce that Meredith and Chris Kearney became the proud parents of Roy James, born on March 25. Everyone is doing well!
HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY In slightly different circumstances to 2020, we head to the school holidays. It has been a busy term, and I feel as a community we have adapted and conformed well to the new Covid-normal. The Victorian ‘circuit-breaker’ lockdown in Term 1, and the recent Brisbane lockdown remind us that it will still be quite some time before we return to what we had before 2020. We will continue to modify events at school, as needs be and in line with the DET Operational Guidelines, and continue to reinforce Covid Safe practices. But, for now, I hope that everyone takes time over the next two weeks to relax and recharge and we look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday, April 19 for the start of a new term.
Kind regards,
Bill Kersing

Issue No. 2 - Listen to the imperfects podcast Teaming up with one of Australia’s most successful comedians, Ryan Shelton, and his very talented brother Josh van Cuylenburg, Hugh has put together a podcast which is all about how perfectly imperfect we all are. Constantly comparing ourselves to others can not only be exhausting, but extremely harmful. However, when we share our struggles, we start to realise that everyone, no matter how successful, has something they are battling with.
In this podcast Hugh will be chatting to a variety of interesting people who will be bravely sharing their struggles and imperfections. Ryan will then join him to discuss some valuable take-aways we can all apply to our own imperfect lives.
We have certainly had a very busy term 1 at Viewbank and I am sure you have noticed your child becoming more tired as the term comes to an end. Please have a fabulous holiday and take the time to rest, relax and recharge.
I look forward to seeing you again in Term 2.
Happy holidays
Gill
VCOP Writing This week, I was able to join a Viewbank writing session, where I experienced how the Year 2’s have been continuing to focus on using VCOP in their writing. Through the use of VCOP, children will develop 4 main aspects of their writing:
- V – Vocabulary
- C – Connectives
- O – Openers
- P – Punctuation
They utilised these skills during their recount writing of their weekend experiences and activities. During a writing lesson, students will have an opportunity to highlight their work, improve on its structure (utilising the VCOP principles) and also edit their writing. Great work Year 2’s, it was outstanding to see you expand your vocabulary in your writing!
Goal Setting in Year 6 The Year 6’s have been working on creating their personal learning goals. The students had an opportunity to self-assess their learning skills and create a goal that would allow them to be an active participant in their learning. The process of setting goals allows students to develop agency for their learning. By doing this, it provides students with both vision and motivation to succeed.
Some of the Year 6 students brainstormed these reflections as to why they like making learning goals. Their responses included:
‘Once you achieve a goal it is rewarding’
‘Goals help you practise what you need to learn and keep you on track’
Setting goals can help students develop:
- Motivation
- Reflective thinking
- Pride in work
- Self confidence
Keep up the great work Year 6, your new goal setting skills will be a great asset for many years to come.
Year 2 Buddies Program Our Year 4’s have shown skills of leadership by becoming buddies to the Year 2 students. Our Buddy program at Viewbank is from Foundation – 2 and supports the students in the early years of schooling. The Buddy program develops the skills of the older student, where they can take on responsibility and pride in supporting another student.
At Viewbank, students are encouraged to utilise all of the school values: Resilience, Respect, Responsibility and Kindness. The role of a buddy is to build a positive relationship with their younger buddy and to share a love of learning.
The Year 2’s and 4’s had an opportunity this week to share their holiday plans and participate in an extra fun basket-making craft activity.
STEM ‘Eggsperiment’ I was delighted to visit the STEM room this week and discover students completing very important design ‘eggsperiments’. The Year 3 students were working to design a container that could safely transport eggs from the chicken coop to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen. This design had the enormous challenge of ensuring that the eggs were able to be transported without breaking. Year 3’s, your designs look fantastic, and I am sure that you were able to transport many eggs safely.
I hope everyone has a restful break, and we look forward to seeing you all again, happy and healthy, for Term 2 on Monday April 19th.
