Black Lives Matter! In 2013, a grassroots movement became a national campaign to stop police violence in the black community, and Dr. Melina Abdullah is on the front lines. She advocates for community safety by protesting racial targeting and violent police actions.

When Life Leads to a Mission

Growing up in East Oakland, California, Melina Abdullah witnessed police abuses against the black neighborhood. For her, the police “were something to be feared.” Since then, she has worked to improve community safety on the principle that “anytime you see something wrong, you raise your voice.”

A Voice for Change

As a professor at California State University, Los Angeles, Dr. Abdullah educates others on race, gender, class, and social movements. As a grassroots activist, she continues to work with legislators, residents, and police to promote community safety and trust.
