The State. What is it? We have two ways to answer this question. One is to use this song. The other, to read Rothbard's timeless piece, "Anatomy of the State." From his chapter on defining what the state is: "The State provides a legal, orderly, systematic channel for the predation of private property; it renders certain, secure, and relatively "peaceful" the lifeline of the parasitic caste in society. Since production must always precede predation, the free market is anterior to the State. The State has never been created by a "social contract"; it has always been born in conquest and exploitation. The classic paradigm was a conquering tribe pausing in its time-honored method of looting and murdering a conquered tribe, to realize that the time-span of plunder would be longer and more secure, and the situation more pleasant, if the conquered tribe were allowed to live and produce, with the conquerors settling among them as rulers exacting a steady annual tribute."

This thrashy metal song lays out how The State operates pretty well. It is all about protection, but not of the citizenry. The protection offered by The State applies to the political class and it’s chornies. The average Joe on the street who is convinced that “we” need government to protect us from this or that, is totally snowed to how The State really operates, and that the only benefits to the public are either contrived to get people to go along with what The State wants for its own interests, or are inadvertent and then politicized afterwards in order to convince folks of the good that government does. Take the EPA for instance. Most people think that the EPA protects the environment and that without it people and businesses would just destroy the environment. When in all actuality the EPA exists to provide a mechanism to transfer liability from the polluters to the government. They get fined a token amount, and then the EPA handles the cleanup Limited liability corporation, allowed by government, then exist to go bankrupt if the company is financially unable to handle it, protecting the investors. Without those protections, the individuals would be liable for the actions of their companies. That my friends is chronyism at its finest disguised as a benevolent government agency.

I'm guessing the writer of this number isn't a big fan of being governed. I'd almost suggest we hand out copies of this song with a paperback of Anatomy Of The State at every college campus in America. Stab them in both the left & right brain. That said. this song does just fine in its own right explaining what the state does. Rule you. Nothing more. Nothing Less. I'm not gonna belabor this one too much because it's pretty plain. Not laden in allegory, just description.
