"Adopt-A-Campground" a mississippi inland cleanup sub-program

Sub-Program Details

The Mississippi Inland Cleanup Program (MSICP) is sponsored by Mississippi State University Coastal Research and Extension Center (CREC), Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC), and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The focus of this program is to remove and prevent environmentally and economically harmful trash from entering both coastal and inland waterbodies through community-based cleanups, education, and awareness activities. The MSICP currently serves 21 southeastern Mississippi counties including Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River, Stone, George, Marion, Lamar, Forrest, Perry, Greene, Jefferson Davis, Covington, Jones, Wayne, Jasper, Clarke, Newton, Lauderdale, Neshoba, and Kemper counties (with the potential to extend outside of this region).

Through conversations with community partners, campgrounds have been identified as prime locations for some of the first Mississippi Inland Cleanup Program activities. Locals and tourists alike enjoy exploring the abundant natural resources throughout Mississippi and campgrounds often serve as the primary entry point for some of the most picturesque landscapes throughout the state. Their close proximity to natural areas, often waterbodies, and accumulation of visitors make campgrounds a perfect location to promote conservationism—however this also makes it a majority point of entry of litter into the environment.

Litter is a global issue that is known to decrease tourism, cost significant amounts of money to cleanup, and have tremendous environmental impacts. Due to limited resources, campgrounds are often littered, but offer a perfect opportunity to celebrate Mississippi’s natural resources and environmental stewardship.

Interested in preserving our natural resources as an individual, group, or organization? Consider adopting your local campground! Adoptees are vetted through an application process and must meet quarterly criteria in order to ensure that these sites will be consistently maintained in an effective and efficient manner; at least one cleanup event must take place per season, per campground/adoptee(s). All data collected during these cleanup programs must be reported to the MSICP Program Coordinator upon completion of an event. Adoptee’s will be reviewed at the end of each year to determine a renewal of campsite adoption status.
