Dear University community,

  • After a week of frigid temperatures that impacted operations throughout the state, we are glad to finally see some bright, Texas sun this week. I would like to especially thank Rec Sports, the University Village and the Residential Learning Community for working extra hard and pulling resources all last week to offer warm shower services to those affected by the unusual weather event.
  • TAMIU CARES or federal Relief Response Supplemental Appropriations (CRRSAA) relief funds applications are now open. Only enrolled students are eligible for this funding assistance. Students, please visit https://www.tamiu.edu/cares/ for updated details and criteria for selection. For more information, please email cares@tamiu.edu.
  • It’s Spirit Week 2021 and a series of virtual and in-person events celebrating student life and school pride are happening throughout this week. I encourage everyone to glance through the full schedule of events and show some Dustdevil spirit by participating.
  • “Bringing the University to You” is a new, virtual lecture series focused on delving into various issues connected to Borders. The lectures are free and open to the public. Please share widely with family and friends. Participants may register here.
  • African American Heritage Month continues with a Liberation in the Americas Series free, virtual lecture titled, “Black Lives, Black Liberation” Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. Register at: GO.TAMIU.EDU/LIBERATION-SERIES. TAMIU One of Six U.S. Minority-Serving Institutions Selected for BranchEd's National Teacher Preparation Transformation Center

TAMIU was selected to participate in the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity’s National Teacher Preparation Transformation Center, providing an immersion process aimed at producing highly effective and diverse teachers.

“We will measure the success of our transformation against the following four outcomes: the quality of integrated student support provided to our candidates; the volume of expanded and enriched learning time beyond the traditional curriculum; the frequency of family and community engagement, and the impact of collaborative leadership and practices.”

TAMIU Faculty Member Dr. Kazen Gets National Excellence in Teaching Award

TAMIU University College assistant professional Dr. Hayley Kazen has been named the recipient of the 2020 Excellence in Teaching First-Year Seminars Award from The National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience.

“At TAMIU’s University College, Dr. Kazen plans and teaches several sections of freshman seminars. She has created curriculum using interactive technology to enhance learning via podcasts, supplemental educational programs including Cultural Awareness Day, Café Prof, and the Globally Connected Classroom, online courses and has earned Quality Matters certification in addition to creating signature assignment to assess core curriculum learning objectives. We are tremendously proud of her and the impact she has on the lives of our students.”

"Black Lives, Black Liberation" Lecture Rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 23

TAMIU’s Liberation in the America Series will present a lecture titled, “Black Lives, Black Liberation.” It features Dr. Gabby Yearwood, director of Undergraduate Studies for the University of Pittsburgh Department of Anthropology and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies Program.

TAMIU Celebrates Spirit Week 2021 with Virtual, In-Person Events

TAMIU students and alumni are gearing up for Spirit Week 2021, a series of virtual and in-person events celebrating student life and school pride, happening Monday-Saturday Feb. 22 – 27.

New Virtual TAMIU Speaker Series Launches Feb. 25

The virtual series, titled, “Bringing the University to You,” is designed to share with the TAMIU community and the public four sets of issues connected to Borders. Sponsored by Humanities Texas and hosted by TAMIU, Series lectures are free and open to the public.
