MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Our business students were welcomed back from spring break with a video from Dean Becton encouraging them to stay engaged during this time of remote learning.

Business Student Research

In the College of Business and Economic Development, student research is an important component of the educational experience for many students. Because of the mentorship provided by the college’s faculty, business students Lacey Wallace, Matthew Yang, Rachel Bronson, and Nichada Satasuk were accepted and selected to present their research projects at the Association of Marketing Theory and Practice (AMTP) Annual Conference in Sandestin, Fla., this month.

Unfortunately, these plans changed due to the continued spread of COVID-19. The students’ remarkable efforts did not go unnoticed however. In lieu of university-sponsored travel restrictions, the School of Marketing hosted a showcase in Scianna Hall on the Hattiesburg campus for the students to present their research findings to a small group of faculty and peers.

Frito-Lay Sales Competition

Experiential learning is an important part of our curriculum and bringing in the experts helps better prepare our students for their careers! Each semester, the Advanced Professional Selling course partners with Frito-Lay for a mock sales pitch competition. This semester is the 4th time this has been done! Following each student's pitch, Frito-Lay sales representatives Arnel Dujkovic, Jamil Murray, and Rachel Anthony gave valuable feedback to help them perfect their sales approach. Congratulations to Savannah Rheams for being selected by the judges as having the best pitch!

School of Management Outreach

The School of Management hosted a Resume Development Workshop in anticipation for the Career and Internship Expo held on campus this month. Over 40 students attended to work on improving their resumes and receive advice about proper business attire.

School of marketing Outreach

Michelle Le, a USM Business alumni, returned to campus to represent Uniqlo, a global Japanese fast fashion retail brand. Michelle and her colleague, Angela Liu hosted an info session for both undergraduate and graduate students interested in learning more about their Management Trainee Program and their internship opportunities.

The School of Marketing also hosted a networking workshop called Professional Polish. Mr. Mark Killingsworth, retired retail executive of Dillard's, was invited to teach the workshop and share his insight based on his extensive experience.

The CFA Society of Mississippi recognizes one outstanding finance major each year. This year, our very own Sachin Yadav was honored with the CFA Society of Mississippi Award at the 17th Annual Forcast Dinner in Jackson. Congratulations Sachin!

Faculty in the news

Mike Morgan, a Professor of Practice in the School of Finance, was interviewed by WDAM for an article discussing the way COVID-19 may be changing the way businesses operate.

“If we can push down the curve and get people back to work, I think we’ll come back pretty strong pretty quickly,” Morgan said.
