Welcome to Reykjavik

The city of Reykjavík has a fascinating history that stretches back over a thousand years. The site was first inhabited in the eighth century by a band of hardy Norsemen. Since then Vikings, monks, sailors, musicians, fishermen, politicians, writers, artists and all manner of folk have played their part in shaping the rich history and culture that makes Iceland’s capital such a vibrant and fascinating place.

Visitors leave Reykjavík with a renewed sense of vigour that can be attributed to Iceland’s pristine air and unique energy, evident all around the city — from the geothermal vents steaming in the midnight sunshine to the great open spaces that adorn the area with a stunning natural landscape. Many year-round activities and events can fill the diary of any interested traveller.

Reykjavík is also home to the world’s oldest parliament — the Alþingi, which was founded in 930 AD. However, today the city is the epitome of a modern European capital with a world-class infrastructure, excellent transport links to Europe and North America, and 200,000 welcoming Icelanders helping you enjoy your stay.

Reykjavík is renowned for an array of features: a big art scene, sight-seeing and nightlife; annual film and music festivals; and numerous shops, museums and restaurants. There’s no other city like the world’s most Northerly capital, situated at a relatively short distance from the Arctic Circle.

Iceland is a pretty isolated place, and that makes Reykjavík a fairly expensive place to hang out. The economist once put it as high as 14th place for its high cost of living. Though if you're coming from New York, Paris, Hong Kong or Tel Aviv — the pain of sticker shock won't bother you.

Visitors from all round the globe also enjoy whale and wildlife watching, relaxing in one of the many thermal spas and pools (such as the famous Blue Lagoon), viewing spectacular sights such as the Imagine Peace Tower (a spectacular tribute to John Lennon) or the Hallgrímskirkja, and touring the amazing countryside — all with the beautiful snow-covered Mount Esja in the background.

Reykjavík is home to some superb hotels, guest houses and other cozy kinds of accommodation for visitors. Information on tours, trips and things to do during your stay can be easily found in this brochure or at the Reykjavík Tourist Information Centre.

However long your stay here, you won’t be short of things to do in Reykjavík.

Day 1 Reyjkavik-Adventure Begins

Meet your private driver-guide and vehicle for an airport transfer. Along the way, your guide will make a stop at the world-famous Blue Lagoon, where you can enjoy the renowned healing properties as you soothe your soul in its mineral waters. A towel rental is included along with your admission. Afterward, for your added comfort, your English-speaking guide will help you with your hotel check-in, and take you through your travel documents. A welcome package with a city map, train tickets (if relevant), and any other touristic information that we deem you may find useful, will be provided to you on your first day in destination. Enjoy an informative guided tour of the Omnom Chocolate Factory in Reykjavik. Get up close and personal during a chocolate-making demonstration, and enjoy a tasting of some of Iceland's best chocolate.

Day 2 Reyjkavik-A City of Contrast

Departing from your hotel with a private guide and vehicle, embark on a tour of Reykjavik to uncover the city's most fascinating sights. Catch beautiful views of Reykjavik's landmark mountain, Mt. Esja, most visible from the northern waterfront. Admire the stark and modern City Hall, standing proudly on the shore of Reykjavik's small central lake, Lake Tjornin. Spot the 19th century Althing, home to the world's oldest parliament, and see the stark white Hofdi House, built in 1909, location for the historic 1986 summit which effectively marked the end of the Cold War. You'll visit the iconic Hallgrimskirkja Church - the largest in all of Iceland. This mid-20th century cathedral is Reykjavik's main landmark structure, its peak visible from almost everywhere in the city. Out front you can spot an impressively intimidating sculpture of Leif Erikson, donated by the United States in recognition of the discovery of the New World by Norse explorers from Iceland. Your tour will also include visits to a pair of Reykjavik's museums: the National Museum, displaying objects that provide insight into Icelandic cultural history, and the and the Asmundarsafn Sculpture Museum, featuring works by celebrated artist Asmundur Sveinsson.

Day 3 Reyjkavik-Sites and Insights

No first trip to Iceland would be complete without experiencing the country’s most famed touring route, the Golden Circle. Departing as a small group with no more than 17 participants, you’ll head out of Reykjavik and make stops at the three most iconic and picturesque natural sites Iceland has to offer along the way, including the mossy Thingvellir National Park, site of the Viking parliament, home to over 1,000 years of human history, as well as the continental divide between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The park offers dramatic scenery and woodland that changes colours throughout the year, making the area a photographer’s delight. You’ll also encounter the magnificent Gullfoss (Golden Falls), one of Iceland’s largest and most photogenic waterfalls, with water constantly rushing from a river that’s fed by the melting Langjokull glacier. Discover the great Geyser geothermal area where the dependable Strokkur geyser spouts hot water as high as 100 feet in the air. The day may also include other short photo stops along the way, depending on the local conditions.

Day 4 Reyjkavik-Outdoor Adventure

Today you’ll embark on a full day tour of Iceland’s picturesque southern coast. Departing from Reykjavik as a small group with no more than 18 other participants, you’ll head east with a knowledgeable guide, along the Ring Road to the south coast, passing over the mountain ranges of Hellisheidi, through bucolic farmlands, and across glacial outwash plains offering ever-changing scenery. You’ll visit the Solheimajokull Glacier, which is part of the Myrdalsjokull ice cap, Iceland's 4th largest glacier. You’ll take a 30 minute walk to reach the edge of the ice and experience this natural wonder up close. From there, continue toward Iceland‘s most famous black sand beach, Reynisfjara, where the roaring Atlantic ocean fiercely hits the shore. From May to August the coastal cliffs here are inhabited by lively puffin colonies. Just off the beach, the Reynisdrangar basalt stacks majestically rise from the sea. Proceed to Vík, the most southern town in Iceland, discovering the local church. Setting back west, you'll arrive to the thundering Skogafoss falls at Skogar, a 210 foot cascade, and the picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where most of the year it's possible to walk behind its falls. Conclude on arrival back to Reykjavik.
