Ron Whitten was born in Omaha, grew up in Papillion and played at Spring Lake Golf Course as a kid. He's been evaluating and writing about golf courses and their architects since 1985, and he's even designed a couple of his own. Most notably, Whitten was part of the team that designed and built Erin Hills in Wisconsin, host of the 2017 U.S. Open and now ranked No. 42 in Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Golf Courses in America.
