Podcast Creation Tools GarageBand - Audacity - SoundTrap

OVERVIEW

There are many different tools in circulation today that can be used to do all the things you need to do to complete a podcast: putting together multiple audio files, adding in sound effects, controlling transitions, and so on. So which one should you choose? It may depend on what you're looking for. Here is a primer on three of the most popular tools out there.

GARAGEBAND

TOOL #1: GARAGEBAND

Overview of the Tool

GarageBand is a free digital audio workstation that comes as a built-in with Macintosh computers. It has a library of free musical instrument MIDI sounds and is designed with the purpose of of creating, playing back, and editing multiple sound files at once.

Pros

  • Comes built-in with Macintosh computers
  • Very good at handling multiple individual tracks
  • You can record audio straight into the interface
  • Simple to learn

Cons

  • You essentially need a Macintosh computer to use it

AUDACITY

TOOL #2: AUDACITY

Overview of the Tool

Audacity is a free, open-source digital audio editor that can be found online. It works with any operating system and has a wide range of effects available for audio manipulation.

Pros

  • Can be used with any operating system - not just Macs
  • Great for manipulating one audio file at a time - many capabilities available

Cons

  • Only supports uploads of existing MIDI files - you can't record straight into it
  • Steeper learning curve
  • Slightly more primitive interface when working with more than a few audio files simultaneously

SOUNDTRAP

Overview of the Tool

SoundTrap is a music creation interface that allows collaborative music creation. It is browser-based and has a library of loops and audio features like GarageBand.

Pros

  • Online - can be easily saved and accessed anywhere
  • Multiple creators can contribute to a project at once
  • Simple to learn, based off of analogy with GarageBand

Cons

  • A paid subscription is required after you have made 5 projects
