Welcome! "the most Southern place on earth" july 2019 neh Workshop

Thirty-six teachers from across the country gathered at Cleveland's Martin and Sue King Railroad Museum today to kick off the Delta Center’s "Most Southern Place on Earth" July workshop. Marking the program's ten year anniversary, this cohort will spend the next week fully immersed in Delta culture, absorbing its history, enjoying its unique sounds and flavors, and traveling to several historic landmarks throughout the region.

Several model trains cruise through the museum, commemorating Cleveland's history as a town created by railroads. The museum stands only meters away from railroad tracks that operated until the late 1990s.

Workshop co-director Lee Aylward greeted participants as they funneled through the door, handing them their nametags and helping them get situated.

Although many participants were tired from many hours of commuting, the museum hall was filled with excited energy and conversation.

Hungry participants got a taste of the Delta, tasting pickled okra, pimento sandwiches and marinated brussels sprouts. Other snacks and beverages like cream puffs, wine and cheese were also provided for teachers to enjoy as they casually chatted and got to know each other.

Co-directors Dr. Ronaldo Herts and Lee Aylward welcomed the participants of the July workshop to Cleveland. As the coming week is jam-packed with countless activities, lectures, trips and other experiences, they half-jokingly warned participants to be on time!
