Operation Jaywick Night Raid Additional Information

Seven ships were reportedly attacked by the operatives but it is still unknown how many were actually damaged. The Japanese never broadcast the news of the attack and there was no Australian intelligence at the time that could confirm anything. As the time moved into the present day, we now know that 3 ships that have confirmed identities, 3 ships with no conclusive evidence but an idea of the names and 1 ship that is completely unknown.

Confirmed Ships

Arare Maru

Built in Glasgow it was originally name Paula and requisitioned by the Dutch Navy in 1938 as an oiler. During 1942 the crew sunk it to avoid it falling into the hands of the Japanese but it was repaired by the Japanese and renamed Arare Maru. In the raid it was attacked by Davidson and Falls where one crew member died and the ship sank. Eventually in 1945 it was salvaged and repaired now back in the hands of its' Dutch owners it continued the oil runs.

Hakusan Maru

Built in 1919 in Yokohama as a cargo ship under the name Sapporo Maru. In 1930 it was renamed Hakusan Maru before being requisitioned by the Japanese. It was used as a cargo ship and likely a tanker by modification to the holds. It was attacked by Page and Jones where it sunk.

Kizan Maru

Built in Glasgow 1917 under the name Camperdown and was used as a cargo ship under 5 different owners before being renamed Kizan Maru and being requisitioned by the Japanese who converted it into a troop transport. Page and Jones attacked it where it was sunk and a crew member died. Salvage was attempted but that ultimately failed.

Unconfirmed Ships

Shosei Maru

Built in Newcastle as a tanker named Solen in 1921 but hired by the Royal Navy in 1941. After the fall of Singapore the crew quickly abandons it to avoid being captured by the Japanese who promptly seize the ship for themselves and rename it Shosei Maru. Likely the ship mined by Lyon and Hutson as it was shown to be under repair at the time of the attack. Eventually it was reclaimed by the British and given its' original name who used it as oil storage.

Nicheren Maru

Little is known about the Nicheren Maru besides that it was under repair with no movements from Singapore at the time of the raid. This was most likely attacked by Davidson and Falls who caused damage but nothing fatal.

Naususan Maru

The Naususan Maru was a converted tanker part of the oil runs. While in Singapore it was likely attacked by Page and Jones before being repaired.

7th Ship

The 3rd ship attacked by Davidson and Falls is very much unknown. It could've been the Nasusan Maru which was also attacked by Page and Jones or a civilian operated tanker called Nikkaku Maru. The attack likely failed though. Probably due to the failure of the detonators or the magnets holding the mine onto the ship.
