Not long ago abandoned to the slow destruction of time. Aldeias do Xisto were revitalized by landowners, the municipalities and by investors in rural tourism, with the support of EU funding through ADXTUR (Agency for the Tourist Development of Aldeias do Xisto). Some of the villages are now thriving tourist destinations for the active traveler (many require some hiking to reach) while others still sit overgrown with the passing of time. Enjoy breathtaking views of the rolling hills; travel back in time to the 15th century when some of them were first established.

Isilda makes goat cheese every day, but she didn’t have many goats not long ago. With the revitalization of the Aldeias do Xisto, she felt encouraged to build up her flock again. For years the community goat shacks had been busy with goats bleating, but with the whole region’s population nearly forgotten by the 1990’s, they were mostly empty shells.

Why Aldeias do Xisto? Run, hike and bike between villages and surrounding countryside. Have your luggage transferred to the next village while you take to the trails to reach the next village in about 15-20km. Other trail loops to explore the immediate vicinity capture your second day before moving on to the next village.

Pedro Pedroza, a "rural tourism" operator (www.A2Z.pt) and local investor, fell in love twice with the area. He went to a friend's birthday party in Casal do S. Simão and there met his wife. Now a permanent resident of the Aldeias do Xisto, he developed bike trails and mountain bike centers. He also runs a bikotel where he has three apartments for rent to travelers.
Pedro Pedroza, un inversionista de turismo rural (www.A2Z.pt), se enamoró dos veces aquí. Fue a una fiesta de cumpleaños de su amigo en Casal do S. Simão y allí conoció a su esposa. Ya es un residente permanente de Aldeias do Xisto, desarrolló senderos de MTB y centros de MTB. También maneja un "bikotel" (un hotel con garage de bicicleta) que tiene tres departamentos que alquila a viajeros.
