A quick-start cheat sheet for getting started on the Zoom. Tips for before the meeting, joining, waiting, and during the meeting.
Before the Meeting
Before joining a Zoom meeting on a computer or mobile device, try to download the Zoom app at www.zoom.com or on your device's app store. Pre-downloading the app beforehand will save time and scrambling.
Joining a Meeting
Prior to your conference, teachers should have sent you a link, invitation, or Meeting ID to join. Follow the directions according to the device you will be using.
Via the Zoom app on Windows/Mac Computer
If sent a link, click it and the Zoom application will automatically open. If you were sent a Meeting ID, open the Zoom application and select "Join a Meeting." Enter your MEETING ID (this is the number associated with a conference from your teacher). The meeting ID can be a 9, 10, or 11 digit number, and enter your display name (could use your child's name or initials). Select your computer audio and click JOIN.
Via the Zoom app on iOS (iPhone, iPad, etc.)
Be sure you have downloaded the Zoom app via the App Store. If sent a link, click on the link from your device and the app will automatically launch. If you were sent a Meeting ID, launch the app and tap JOIN A MEETING (no need to sign in). Enter your MEETING ID, and enter your screen name. Be sure your audio and video are on, and select JOIN.
Via the Zoom app on Android
Be sure you have downloaded the Zoom app via the Google Play Store. If sent a link, click on the link from your device and the app will automatically launch. If you were sent a Meeting ID, launch the app and tap JOIN A MEETING (no need to sign in). Enter your MEETING ID, and enter your display name (could use your child's name or initials). Be sure your audio and video are on, and select JOIN.
Waiting for the Host/Teacher to Start the Meeting
If your teacher hasn't started the meeting (meaning he/she is not yet on your screen), you'll receive something similar to the following message (see image to the left). Just wait patiently for a few minutes for your teacher to jump on or to let you into the meeting.
During the Meeting
CHAT: You can open a chat window by clicking CHAT. This is a great feature to have in case someone's speakers aren't working or are not on. You can alert each other via CHAT if you can't hear one another. Teachers may also share resources with you using this feature.
SCREEN SHARE: This is an awesome tool that allows your teacher to be able to see what they are seeing, maybe to highlight student work and achievement.
PATIENCE: Technology is amazing when it works correctly. For those times that it doesn't, it is important to be patient and understanding.
