victory bell stays at duke, 42-35

QB Daniel Jones compiled a school single-game record 547 yards of total offense as Duke topped North Carolina, 42-35, to keep possession of the coveted Victory Bell. The 105th meeting between the two schools featured 1,165 total yards before S Brandon Feamster knocked down the Tar Heels' last second throw into the end zone to preserve the victory.

chris taylor opened duke's 42-point afternoon with a 52-yard touchdown reception from daniel jones at the 10:22 mark of the first period.
With 6:20 remaining in the opening quarter, TE Daniel Helm caught his second touchdown pass in as many weeks to tie the game at 14-14.

At the end of the first period, the Duke baseball team was honored on the field in recognition of the Blue Devils' 2018 season, which included a school single-season record 45 victories and a berth in the NCAA Super Regionals.

The Blue Devils claimed their first lead of the day when TE Davis Koppenhaver hauled in this two-yard scoring pass from QB Daniel Jones. The touchdown catch marked the 11th of Koppenhaver's career, establishing a new school record for scoring receptions by a tight end. The previous standard of 10 touchdowns was held by Stan Crisson (1961-63).
LB Brandon Hill earned the first starting assignment of his career and posted a team-high 10 tackles while S Jordan Hayes came off the bench to contribute five tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss and one pass breakup.
"I gave Jordan Hayes the game ball. I told him I don’t have to watch the tape. His energy and effort in the second half were really special." -- David Cutcliffe
RB Deon Jackson's four-yard touchdown pushed Duke in front, 28-21, with 6:52 left in the first half. Jackson leads the Blue Devils with eight TDs on the season.
To close out the scoring in the first half, QB Daniel Jones ran 61 yards for a touchdown and a 35-28 Duke lead.

“Part of that’s the scheme that Carolina plays is a lot of man-to-man so it opens up opportunities for the quarterback to run. I think on both of those long runs, I might not have even gotten touched – I don’t remember – but that credit goes to the offensive linemen. Those seams that were open, I just tried to run as fast as I could." -- Daniel Jones

CB Antone Williams highlighted Duke's special teams play with four tackles on kickoff coverage.
QB Quentin Harris scored on a two-yard run with 1:42 left in the third quarter to give Duke a 42-28 advantage.
The Duke defense limited the Tar Heels to zero first downs and 23 total offensive yards in the third quarter.

"We definitely tackled better and had better effort. I don’t know whether we were in shock or were on our heels at the start of the game but it didn’t look like our defense. I told our coaches at halftime that we had to attack the turnover and tackle … tackle fiercely. If we tackle better, we will have better results. And we did tackle better.” -- David Cutcliffe

QB Daniel Jones completed 31-of-54 passes for 361 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
