Reasons to Study Abroad By Lizzy Theysohn

Studying abroad provides so many opportunities for students to explore the world while earning credits towards their degree. This blog is based on my experience studying abroad in Tuscany with ECU's Italy Intensives program. Keep a lookout for the photos throughout this blog, I took them in my photography class while I was abroad! If studying abroad is of interest to you, keep reading to find out why you should plan to go now.

1. See the World!

Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to travel and learn, both in and out of class. ECU offers more than 200 programs in 60+ countries! Students have the opportunity to choose from a full semester-long trip or a shorter summer trip. By studying abroad, you will be able to appreciate other cultures, learn new languages, and travel to nearby countries as well. As part of the Italy Intensives program, students travel to different parts of Italy almost every week. On the weeks the group doesn't travel together, students are able to travel wherever they would like as long as they are back for class the following week!

2. Unlimited Learning

ECU's study abroad programs provide students with the courses they need to take in order to further their degree. Many study abroad experiences also offer classes that most students wouldn't get to take! By working with your advisor to plan a course schedule, you can take a mix of fun classes and classes towards your degree that will help you to fulfill all of your required courses and graduate on time. ECU's Italy Intensive allows students to take Yoga, Book Making, Jewelry Designing, Art History, and so many more incredible classes. Studying abroad is a great way to diversify your resume and help you stand out. Even more, the skills you gain from studying abroad can increase your chances of making connections and potentially finding a job.

3. Social Growth

Studying abroad can open your eyes to new activities and interests that you didn’t know you had before. You will be able to experience different sports, music, food, entertainment, etc. when you are in a new place. Along with that, you have the opportunity to meet lifelong friends, some from the same area as you and others that come from different backgrounds. Making these connections and putting in the effort to stay in contact, even after the program is over, will give you friendships that last a lifetime.

4. Personal Growth

Being on your own in a foreign country is a very unique experience. It will build up your independence and problem-solving skills. Even though it may sound overwhelming, it gives you the opportunity to grow and mature. Studying abroad shows others that you aren’t afraid to be in difficult situations or seek out new challenges. Along with all of this, studying abroad is a way to travel while you have the chance! After you find a job and get settled into a career, taking time off can be more difficult. Studying abroad is an affordable opportunity to travel and further your education all in one.

Studying abroad is an amazing experience and unlike anything else!!
