After completing this presentation, learners will be able to:
- Explain and define backwards design.
- Discuss why backwards design is used in curriculum alignment.
- Develop a curriculum map by aligning course goals to key assignments.
Last week we looked at the assessment cycle, focusing on the first step of the assessment cycle -- planning. We used a mind map to produce student goals.
This week, we are going to be focusing on step two of the assessment cycle: implement. Using your mind map from last week, we can start to create a curriculum map. We used a mind map to help you produce the key goals you wanted your students to achieve by the end of your course.
- Above is an example of a curriculum map for a short course I put together.
- At the bottom of the curriculum map are the goals (outcomes) I had for each of my learners.
- At the top, are the aligned assignments to those goals.
- This map format is adaptive. The same template can be used for weekly outcomes, course outcomes, or entire program outcomes. My example uses course outcomes.
Now that you have learned how to curriculum map, using your Mind Map from last week, create a curriculum map for the course of your choice using the Google Doc link below. Be sure to choose the empty map template with your name. We will review together your maps after you complete the exercise. Feel free to browse and see what ideas your colleagues came up with.
