Note from our Head

Dear Oakfield families,

What a week it's been! It all kicked off with a fantastic initiative bringing together the 3 schools that sit under the Education Development Trust Independent Schools umbrella; ourselves, St Andrew's from Rochester and Danesfield Manor School in Surrey. I speak to the respective Heads at our sister schools on a regular basis but it was wonderful to offer the children the opportunity to meet their peers and we are very proud of the warm welcome the Oakfield children extended to all.

The pupils enjoyed a Singing Assembly led by the irrepressible Mr Howes, got to enjoy our playground during breaktime and then take part in some friendly intra-school cross-country races at Rosendale playing fields. See the photos and video from the morning below. Thankfully the sun shone down on runners and spectators alike.

Thank you also to our Head of UK Independent Schools Mrs Deborah Leek-Bailey who came to join us for the morning and presented medals to the children at the Cross-Country. Truly wonderful collaboration and we look forward to arranging many more such occasions in the future!

Have wonderful weekends and if you are attending firework displays or bonfire nights then I hope you enjoy them and wrap up warm!

OPEN MORNING AT OAKFIELD

We had another wonderful Open Morning on Tuesday and received great feedback from parents about the tours given to them by our amazing Year 6s. If you know any parents you think could or should be considering Oakfield for their child please let them know we have another Open Morning on Tuesday 30th November. We would love to welcome them and show them round our site now that restrictions allow.

Roll up, roll up

BIRTHDAY BROADCAST

RAINBOW DAY

Incredible news that Oakfield have raised nearly £1,000 for our chosen charity VICTA. The proceeds made will make a huge difference in supporting the young people and their families affected by blindness and partial-sightedness.

The 3 children who helped Mr Bower complete his marathon saw their t-shirts arrive from Victa and Jesse received a medal that reads in Braille 'We Run Together'. And that just about says it all!

Well done Oakfield community for all the efforts made and the fantastic contribution to charity!

Our VICTA victors!

Here are the sports stars from the week before half-term!

And Oakfield will be taking part in the below event next week. It's so great to have inter-school sports back in full swing!

YEAR 6

This week we learnt about classification so came up with our own classification criteria for buttons! During the lesson we moved onto the classification of living things, using classification keys and are now making our own leaflets about amphibians, reptiles, fish, mammals, insects, birds, etc. We learnt about Carl Linnaeus' work as the first explorer to define natural genera and species of organisms to explain how our natural world fits together.

Classify this!

YEAR 5

This week we have continued talking about employment during the Victorian period. Some of the jobs looked like squeezing into the train engine to clean it and clearing the muddy banks for the train to pass on the tracks.

We have made some job adverts, would you sign up to one?

Tough work if you can get it

YEAR 3

Year 3 have been finding out about artist Howardena Pindell this week and have then got busy making artwork using 'chads'. Chads are the little pieces of paper that come out when you use a hole punch.

More than just a chad. Geddit?

Our Year 3 History topic this half term is 'The Romans' and we have been thinking about pictures that are made up of lots of little points of colour. The Romans made mosaics and, as it turns out, Howardena Pindell makes her work using 'chads'. It was great fun collecting all our materials and took quite a lot of organisation. Some of the children carefully placed every 'chad' where others sprinkled liberally! The Art Studio looked as if there had been a wedding once we'd finished, with chads scattered like confetti across the floor! But the children did an excellent job of helping to tidy up at the end of the lesson. We are all looking forward to finishing off our spotty compositions next week.

YEAR 2

Read all about it! Year 2 had fun looking at newspapers and the important features. They worked with a partner to create grabbing headlines for some traditional fairy tales:

Big Bad wolf left crying!

Who ate my biscuit!

Have you seen my shoe!

Red Riding Hood makes a friend!

In mathematics the children worked in groups to find out what they could buy for £1.00. They did this by using their number bond skills.

Isaiah, “I can buy the cricket bat for 60pence and the ball for 40pence, which will come to £1.00!”
Amaarah, “I am going to buy the gloves for 40pence and the car for 60 pence, which makes 100!”
Alexander, “We cannot buy the car and the bat, which is more than £1.00 because 70 add 50 is 120!”

YEAR 1

This week Year 1 have been sharing their wonderful Family Tree Projects. It was great to hear everything about their backgrounds and various family members. Thank you to all the parents for taking such time with the children to complete these projects.

We have moved on to a new topic this half term, 'Deadly 60' which is about the 60 deadliest animals in the natural world. If you have any books or toy animals the children would like to share, please send them in to school - remember to please make sure they are clearly labelled.

Tree Cheers to everyone!

LOWER FOUNDATION

Creativity and tasty treats all to be found in Lower Foundation!

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

Hedgehog

In Hedgehog Club this week the children discussed Diwali and the tradition of making Rangoli Art. They used colourful sand to make beautiful patterns, and then at the end of the club, destroyed their art. They observed that ‘it is important to learn to let go’.

They're not also-rans!

Breakfast Club

We have spaces available so why not book your child into Breakfast Club? A nutritious breakfast and fun recreational games await from 7.40am! Book via the parent portal by clicking on your children's daybook.

MATHS WORD OF THE WEEK

Symmetry

Something is symmetrical when it has two matching halves. You can check for symmetry in a shape by drawing a mirror line down the middle and seeing if both halves are identical.

Simply put, symmetrical (or symmetric) shapes have one side that is the same as the other. Symmetrical shapes look the same after being reflected, rotated, or translated.

If we can draw a line directly through the centre or axis of a shape, so that either side of the line is a reflection of the other, then it is a symmetrical shape with reflectional symmetry. We also refer to the line that we draw through the shape as a line of symmetry.

Some shapes can have multiple lines of symmetry. Take a square, for example - you can draw four lines of symmetry on a square. One horizontally across the middle, one vertically down the middle, and two going diagonally each way.

SPANISH

What is Dia de Muertos for Spanish people?

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration that honours the deceased on November 2, beginning on November 1, and coinciding with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints' Day and the celebration of Halloween (which is celebrated on October 31).

Traditions connected with the holiday include:

  • Honouring the deceased using calaveras and aztec marigold flowers known as cempazúchitl
  • Building home altars called ofrendas with the favourite food and beverages of the departed
  • Visiting graves with items as gifts for the deceased
  • Give gifts to friends such as calaveras de azucar (candy sugar skulls)
  • Share traditional pan de muerto with family and friends

This Mexican festival of the Day of the Dead has been recognised by Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and apart from its rich traditions it has a typical gastronomy of these dates. Some children made a Dia de Muertos recipe at home including these children below.

The sweet release of Day of the Dead!
