October 2019 @BVNLibrary The quarter ended with more breakouts, more speed dating, and plenty of research! Read on to find out more.

Absolute Ruler Speed Dating

Students in Mr. Jones's and Mr. Dudley's Modern World History classes and Mr. Breedlove's and Mrs. Cornell's AP Euro classes studied absolute rulers and monarchs and participated in a speed dating session. Students had to act as the ruler they studied and find the partners that worked best with their style of ruling. Student had 2 minutes to get to know their rulers and make connections for their kingdoms.

This I Believe

Students in Mrs. Worthington's and Mrs. Weir's AP Lit classes wrote essays in the style of NPR's This I Believe. Students used their computers and phones to record their work and share with their classmates and teachers via Google Docs and Canvas.

AP French 4/5

Students in Madame Johnson's AP French classes read The Little Prince (the French edition), played the Little Prince game from our BVEF grant board game collection, wrote a missing chapter for the novel, and then created the planet from the chapter they wrote.

Senior Research Papers

Students in ELA 12 and Contemporary Communications classes began the research paper process. We gave them a current events quiz to begin and asked them not to use their phones. Then they were able to compare their answers with peers, and finally they were able to look up the answers. This jumpstarted the conversations for choosing a topic that was current, relevant, and interesting to them. The entire process occurred in Canvas with students turning in assignments through modules moderated by the librarians in teacher's Canvas courses.

AVID College Fair

Students in Mr. Dudley's AVID 11 classes researched potential college choices and set up a college fair in the library. Students shared the information they learned with other AVID classes and provided treats and swag to convince people to come to their schools!

Cell Biology

Students in Mr. Smalley's Biology classes created a design challenge after learning about cells. Students were tasked with designing cells with a specific purpose based on what they knew about cell structure.

Students designed the cells, wrote about their functions and purpose, and created them out of Play-doh.

Finally, they used the Flex Space to host a poster session where they explained their cells and then displayed the projects in the library.
