It’s that time of year again. The time of year when all your friends and family are setting New Year’s resolutions. For me, I find it a little annoying, probably because I know I never stick to my resolution. This is because I find them too general and there are no milestones, which is what keeps me engaged and on track. So instead, I like to create a yearlong challenge for myself. This has measurable milestones and can be flexible for me, which as a working mom I very much appreciate. With this thought in mind, this year I created a challenge for anyone who loves libraries or wants to explore our libraries. Don’t worry, it won’t be hard. In fact, it’ll be really fun and enlightening. The missions are meant to be done in any order you like. If you do one per month, you’ll have something to look forward to right until the end of the year.
Librarian’s Challenge 2019:
Mission #2: Read a New York Times Best Seller
Why: I know I get stuck in a reading rut and I am sure you do, too. Sometimes, it is just hard to find something new to read or to read something that you normally wouldn’t read. By completing this task, you will push yourself to find something new to read. (Pssst ... Don’t forget to check the book out from your library.)
Mission #4: Attend a Library Program
Why: Did you know that each year Placer County Library hosts hundreds of free programs where you can learn new things, make something, listen to a speaker, see a special performance or join in a discussion? Check out our website at www.placer.ca.gov/library/programs to see what exciting thing is happening at your local library.
Mission #6: Tell Someone About Your Favorite Book
Why: This is the best way to recommend a book to someone and help them discover something that they might not have read before. Also, it is fun to hear about each other’s favorite books and why. Hint: We librarians love to hear about your favorite books.
Mission #7: Checkout a Library Book
Why: The best way to get into the habit of reading is by borrowing a book. If your book is borrowed, then you are more likely to read it because you have to return it. Also, visiting the library is fun and you are bound to discover something new while you are there.
Mission #8: Read a Children’s Picture Book
Why: Picture books aren’t just for kids. Really, it’s true. Picture books have some of the most amazing artwork in them. They also tackle some of the harder subjects in ways that are accessible to everyone. So, pick up a picture book and read it. Enjoy the story, enjoy the art, but most of all enjoy the sense of being young again. You’ll be amazed at what memories are brought up by reading a picture book.
Don’t forget to share with us your experiences while completing this challenge. You can tell us or post about it on social media using #placercountylibrary. I hope that this upcoming year is filled with joy, learning and discovery for you and yours. Happy New Year!
