Dear University community,
Our countdown clock is ticking away loudly with classes set to start next Monday, Aug. 23.
- In addition to our students, we’ll be welcoming 41 new faculty members to campus. We’re excited to have them join the TAMIU community. Find out more.
- To help meet the needs of those returning students as they transition to the full-campus experience, we are adding 84 positions focused on helping students, including visiting faculty, mentors and tutors, supplemental instructors and learning support specialists.
- An important federal grant here that addresses the critical need for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) has received a $1.3 million continuance grant to add to its impressive legacy. My congratulations to College of Nursing and Health Sciences Dean Dr. Marivic Torregosa and her team for their outstanding commitment to this program.
- Recently, TAMIU TexPREP fourth-year students placed third at the virtually-hosted Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Symposium hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio. Kudos to our Office for Outreach and Precollege Programs for their leadership with this vital summer enrichment program for middle and high school students.

TAMIU Meets Fall Student Needs with 84 New Support Staff
Through federal funding, the University has dedicated some $383,146 to add visiting faculty, and expand mentors and tutors, supplemental instructors, and learning support specialists. In total, 84 positions focused on helping students are being added this Fall.
“We all have to realize that students: freshmen, transfer, returning, undergraduate, and graduate will be presenting at the University with different levels of support needs. In the instance of freshmen, many did not have a traditional learning structure for their last semesters in high school. Transfers and returning students may also have needs that emerged through changes in teaching modalities or absences from campus. Everyone will have some form of adjustment. We pledge to meet them wherever they are and build up or restore their skillsets with scaled-up support dedicated to their success."
- Dr. Pablo Arenaz, University president
HRSA Continuance Grant Empowers TAMIU-SANE Program
A federal grant dedicated to expanding the number of nurses who are certified as critically needed Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners has received a $1.3 million continuance to empower its expanded scope and reach.
“This HRSA grant continuance allows us to expand on our successful legacy with the program, first funded in 2018. To date, we’ve certified 35 local nurses as SANE for adults and adolescents CA-SANEs. We’ll be recertifying them and expanding to include 36 SANE with a pediatric specialty or CP-SANEs. Sadly, there continues to be a critical need for adult, adolescent, and pediatric SANE Nurses in our region and beyond.”
- Dr. Marivic Torregosa, College of Nursing and Health Sciences dean

“We have recruited an impressive group of faculty to join us this Fall semester. All are the result of nationwide searches, and we’re eager to provide them with an opportunity to share their insight and guidance with our students. The majority holds the highest terminal degree in their disciplines, bringing additional depth and research expertise to further distinguish our students’ learning experience here.”
