"A DOG’S LIFE"

"A DOG'S LIFE"
By Paul Fersen
Bringing down a bird without a dog is tantamount to reading the last page of a great book. The result is the same, but there is no pleasure in it. Every bird brought to hand by a dog is a story unto itself. From the moment a puppy appears and the flood of possibilities fills a hunter’s heart, the book is written. Every bird is an additional chapter, every point, flush and retrieve a passage to be added to the manuscript which ultimately becomes the story of their lives.
Every bird is an additional chapter, every point, flush and retrieve a passage to be added to the manuscript which ultimately becomes the story of their lives.
We travel a long road with our dogs. They become part of us and we praise and cajole and scold our way to an understanding that plays itself out in the hundreds of fields and marshes over the years. A great book is only disappointing when it ends. The same can be said for a great dog.

GOKEY
The Gokey® construction process is an incredible example of the bootmaker’s art—a rare thing in today’s mass-produced world. Our craftsmen expertly hand cut and hand sew the finest oil-tanned bullhide leather using techniques that date back generations—methods that take years to teach. Next, a welt is stitched to this so cunningly that no awl hole ever completely penetrates the shoe leather to admit water. An arch support, the outer sole, and the top are added. Each stitch of waxed thread is knotted, locking it firmly in place. Keep in mind, this is done for every single individual shoe that leaves the factory.
For the ultimate fit, nothing rivals handcrafted Gokey hunting boots custom-made to your specifications. Gokey will take your precise foot measurements to custom fit a shoe or boot to your exact foot width, length and arch. Imagine, footwear that will last a lifetime or more, and has the comfort of one made solely to your own foot’s measurements.
Discover our full selection of Gokey footwear and a step-by-step for ordering a custom pair at orvis.com.

"THE TRIUMPH OF AN EMPTY FREEZER"
By Reid Bryant
"THE TRIUMPH OF AN EMPTY FREEZER"
By Reid Bryant
When I was a kid, my older sister infuriated me with her ability to stretch a haul of Halloween candy well past Thanksgiving, and sometimes as far as Christmas. Her restraint was remarkable; I even remember her on more than one occasion unwrapping a Reese’s Peanut-Butter Cup and taking a measured bite, only to re-wrap what was left for reconsideration some days later. I suppose that her delight in protracting that seasonal wealth of sugar was made all the sweeter by my inability to make my candy last longer than a few days… a week at the best. Halloween in my memory was a slurry of sticky fingers and a bellyache, and the disconcerting feeling that my teeth were, as my mother claimed, in imminent danger of rotting away to nothing. That my sister on occasion hoarded her candy so long that it got stale and summarily chucked in the trash was, despite the obvious philosophic implications, of little consolation to me.
It was, therefore, no small effort for me to train myself in the arts of self-discipline, arriving in middle-adulthood with a tight-fisted, and somewhat puritan, reserve. Granted, my tastes have changed a bit: what October currency I once measured in Hershey Bars and Tootsie Pops and Butterfingers, I now locate in the popple whips and alders, little bits of flesh and feather that I carefully draw and quarter, and stack like bound bills in my freezer. Truth be told, I now sometimes suspect my own restraint, as I know that the finest expression of a piece of game is to save it from the deep freeze, to simply let it mellow for a few days in the woodshed before searing, and serving hot and rare.
I know that the finest expression of a piece of game is to save it from the deep freeze, to simply let it mellow for a few days in the woodshed before searing, and serving hot and rare.
But then the agonies of youth leave a bitter taste, as do the fears of scarcity, so I pack and freeze my game, and savor the steady filling of the ice box.
On a recent late-summer Sunday, I found myself elbow-deep in the cellar freezer, rifling through the dregs of last season’s meat in want of a little something for the grill. There were some dove breasts down there somewhere, and, I thought anyway, a few packages of spatchcocked quail. From the far corner I plucked an ice-crusted ziplock bag of dubious origin, un-labeled save for a scrawled 2012 in black marker. Inside, I was appalled to find the freezer-burned remains of three woodcock, a day’s limit sadly forgotten, no doubt at the time squirreled away in reverie, an homage to my skill. That I couldn’t remember the day or the birds saddened me all the more, for the memory I’d intended to freeze in time and plastic had, like the birds themselves, been forgotten as the seasons slipped by.
As I get older, I wonder at times if there isn’t something quite lovely, quite reverent, in the raw and unabashed enthusiasm of youth. I wonder if in planning for the lean times, in amassing our wealth only to monitor it and fear its loss, we don’t just keep our joys more distant, and harder to remember. Needless to say, it has been a long time since I sat down and dumped a pile of candy on the floor and raked through it like a she-bear, emerging some time later with chocolate on my face. I’d be embarrassed to be caught at such a thing these days, even if I were so inclined. But so too has it been awhile since I ate all the season’s grouse fresh and plucked, or celebrated the teal opener with a hot fire and cold beer, wrapping the diminutive birds in bacon and jalapeno in plain sight of the water whence they were taken. Maybe it’s time I did so. Maybe it’s time I learned to see the triumph in an empty freezer, and a season well-spent and well-savored, every step of the way.
