Our goal is for you to learn about the stages of Design Thinking, explore resources, and hear about an authentic real world project around classroom redesign and student voice and choice. In this example, you will learn how High School Business and English classes allowed for student creativity and the development of community partnerships. This includes students applying collaborative strategies in building their own prototypes to be showcased. Our goal is to have you walk away with a better understanding of the Design Thinking Process and inspire you to try something new within your content area.

Our story depicts how students, utilizing the Design Thinking process, take a current high school space of their choice and redesign it to fit their needs. During this project, each group presented their design to a community partner in the high end furniture manufacturing industry presenting their ideas for consideration shark tank style.

Our Story with Design Thinking and Community Partnerships

Our story began with an idea 4 years ago in a PLT designed on Project-Based Learning. This led to a follow up PLT on Design Thinking where we brainstormed on how the process could be applied across multiple subjects as well as all grade levels. In Fall 2017 we had the opportunity to bring our first PBL story to Masscue which led to an inspiration overload in bringing design thinking to the next level in our very own classrooms.

Phase 1:

We chose a Classroom Redesign Project in our English and Business Classrooms with a goal to design a Modern 21st Century Classroom with flexible seating options. We utlized the MooreCo Space Planner given through CDW and partnered with AIS Systems which is a local furniture company to bring this project to "real life". Students had to go through the steps of the Design Thinking Process to come up with their final "Prototypes".
