Ama Anwar NYU Tisch Future Imagemakers 2019

Young & Old

As the oldest sister (and cousin on my mother’s side of the family), I am constantly surrounded by the playful spirit of children. Although elders are stereotypically known as “wiser,” in many ways, their nature is often more youthful than you would think. Despite common conceptions of physical deterioration and pessimistic outlooks, their generation has experienced many joyful moments in life, and because of that they continue to overcome physical and mental struggles, all while making a difference in the world. Moreover, my elders have offered their wisdom and advice towards life, whereas younger individuals offer laughter, and playfulness. I would like to portray the elders in my family and their relationships with their younger family members, their pastimes, and the environments that they choose to live in.

This project focuses on the youth and the elderly. Through capturing the environments of the elders and the youth in my life, viewers are be able to see a perspective on both of their daily lives and gain insight into their personalities. These photographs feature grandparents, younger cousins, siblings, and infants in their natural settings, showing that the generations are more similar than we think.
