FSS Impact Report 2019-2020 Fiscal Year

Dear Fayerweather Community,

As I reflect back on the past year, particularly the last eight months, I could not imagine that the Fayerweather learning community would be in a place of thriving and moving forward with excitement. The re-design of school has taken an enormous effort, as well as an incredible amount of financial, time, and energy resources that could have only happened through collaboration and partnership with staff, students, parents and friends of Fayerweather.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude! I have seen our staff, students, and families rise to a new and uncharted global pandemic that upended day-to-day life with grace, determination, and compassion and creativity. The impact of your partnership has turned lemons not just into lemonade, but lemon meringue, lemon bars, and so much more.

We started this school year with a new sense of purpose and a belief and trust that together, we shine! New resources, including state of the art technology, furnishings and renovations; health & safety equipment; software and operational systems like the Magnus Student Health; expanded Wifi capacity; subscriptions to new educational resources; and our most important resource—people! We have invested in employing more staff during the school day to support students and teachers, allowing us to redeploy our extended day staff and avoid any furloughs or layoffs. We have provided professional development to every staff member focused on outdoor and online learning for our teachers and multi-faceted training for administrators on how to re-open, operate, plan for a safe and successful school year.

And so it is with this overwhelming gratitude, that I present this snapshot of the impact of your philanthropy. You will see updates about some of the professional development in which staff participated and how they are implementing those learnings. We often like to say that Fayerweather is a community of learners - that asking questions, exploring options, and seeking meaning aren’t just things that Fayerweather students do, but things most of us do during our time at Fayerweather. In the classroom, on committees, participating in philanthropic efforts: being in this community means being active in this community, and we appreciate so much the ways in which the Fayerweather community shows up and seeks understanding about the goals and challenges we share as a school, and then pitch in to see our students succeed.

Your belief in Fayerweather is essential to the success of our school—in this unusual year and in the future. I know that we will all look back on this year as a time when our community came together, learned, grew, and moved forward stronger than ever.

In partnership,

Kim

Forest School

Place-based Outdoor Education

Classroom teachers in the younger years spent time this summer attending sessions with the Forest School outdoor program in order to prepare for Fayerweather’s hybrid learning model. After a difficult spring teaching PreK/K students through Zoom, Forest School seemed like a natural antidote, and hope for making school in-person possible for the fall. The values of Forest School align well with Fayerweather’ values: curiosity and wonder, experiential learning, inquiry-based learning, student-directed learning, project-based learning, seeing the whole child, risk-taking, fostering caring relationships with each other, and with the world around us, valuing diversity, social responsibility.

Being in nature involves being flexible and adaptable - to the physical environment, and to the weather. The COVID world requires more flexibility around adhering to safety standards and protocols, and Forest School helps students to develop this skill. Accessing outdoor spaces such as Fresh Pond gives some figurative and literal breathing room for cohorts.

New PreK teacher Amy Rothschild noted that “nature provides its own provocations and really puts teachers in the learner role right alongside the students. On one of our first trips to Fresh Pond this year, we planned to lead a lesson about identifying poison ivy. But as soon as we arrived, we spotted a green heron hunting a frog just feet away from where we sat. We offered students their journals to sketch the green heron, and we took out our field guide to learn alongside them.”

This professional development was made possible by contributions to the FSS Annual Fund.

Staff Professional Development Work

Over the summer, Fayerweather’s 3/4 teaching staff completed professional development work around math and project-based learning. The primary goal of this professional development work was to help meet specific needs of our learners through tailored, differentiated lessons that focus on choice and challenge.

Project based learning is a way of thinking about designing curriculum that motivates students to learn deeply about a topic and provides opportunities for students to make choices in their learning. One 3/4 teacher, Diana Tatz, commented that “the PBL workshop was a reminder of some of the reasons I believe in project-based curriculum design, and provided a clear structure for planning, reflection and student choice. It taught me some new ways to build in skills and check points for self- and teacher assessment. We also learned new ideas for collaboration via zoom, and ways to share steps in a project for peer feedback.”

The Math professional development sessions provided a variety of strategies for supporting in-depth math conversations with students as well as new ways of differentiation for students who are struggling, English language learners, and kids who need more challenge.

Every gift to the FSS Annual Fund supports our students and staff on a day-to-day basis. Your support opens the doors of opportunity for engaged learners to become graduates with a sense of purpose, passion, and a strong belief in themselves and the power of community.
