My passion was wanting to understand at the deepest levels possible how the world works, and how we as humans think and interact with the world.
Mike is the founder and CTO of Vubiq Networks, a wireless technology company, headquartered in Irvine, CA. He has worked in this industry for over 30 years. He began his college career as an engineering major at Cal State Los Angeles in 1967, and then transferred to Cal State Fullerton in 1968. Since graduating with a philosophy degree from CSUF, he has done post graduate work in technical areas, including signal processing and wireless technologies. He says:
My interests in these areas have been bolstered by the basics of clear thinking, logic, and a deep understanding of the natural world.
Mike was always interested in "bed rock" questions related to science, math, and technology. This is why he entered the philosophy program after first majoring in engineering and then seriously considering a change to physics. He eventually realized the deep questions about the bed rock level of the world that interested him were best pursued via philosophy.
For Mike, philosophy is a method towards clarity in any area of study. He finds his philosophical roots in "natural philosophy," a category of philosophy that studied the natural world using philosophical, scientific, and mathematical tools.
Mike always advises students to study in the area of their passion. But he says the ability to easily traverse unique areas of study and make connections -- an ability philosophy helps develop -- is "a fundamental aspect of creativity and innovation."
