SCHOOL CAMPING PROGRAM After an 18 month ‘hiatus’ our school camping program resumes Monday week when the Grade 6 students head off to Camp Coonawarra in Bairnsdale for a four night, five day adventure. The Grade 4 students will also be heading to Anglesea in the middle of that week, making it a big camping week all round. Both groups will return on the Friday afternoon with these times being staggered somewhat to avoid congestion on Winston Road. Precise times will be advised during the afternoon via Compass as staff ring in approximate ETAs, but at this stage the Grade 6s will return at 2.30pm and the Grade 4s at 3.30pm.

SCHOOL COUNCIL The May meeting of School Council is scheduled for next Tuesday, May 11, commencing at 7pm in the staffroom.

FOUNDATION INFORMATION EVENING FOR 2022 PROSPECTIVE ENROLMENTS The Foundation 2022 Information Night is to be held from 6.30pm until 7.30pm in the Gymnasium tonight. Please let friends and neighbours know if they don’t know already!

NAPLAN The annual NAPLAN assessments for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will resume on May 11. These assessments cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy and over time. Remember that NAPLAN tests are one aspect of our school’s assessment and reporting process, and they do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. Your child’s teacher will have the best insight into your child’s educational progress.

CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to all students who participated in today’s Cross Country at Price Park. As always, it was well planned and managed by the Grade 3 to 6 teaching staff, under the directions of P.E. teachers, Kori Stuckey and Sharon Groves. Many thanks, too, to our volunteers who lined the course, rendering assistance and encouragement. The top 10 in each age and gender group have now qualified for the District Cross Country event to be held at Banyule Flats on Wednesday 26th May.

MOTHER’S DAY I sincerely hope all of our Mums have a great day on Sunday and are truly spoiled!

Have a great weekend.

Kind regards,

Bill Kersing

Principal

.

It has been lovely to see our wonderful parent volunteers gradually returning to assist at school. Our uniform shop and icypole sales assistants have been on duty since Term 1.

I think we can almost deem them ‘essential volunteer workers’.

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden volunteers have been busy helping out for a few weeks now and this week, we welcomed many reading helpers in Foundation to Year 2. Although there are fewer helpers than past years, due to COVID requirements, there was certainly an excited buzz as the students got to read aloud and share their book with the reading helpers this week. We have also been lucky enough to have parent helpers at sporting events, on excursions and in the coming weeks attending school camps at Anglesea and Bairnsdale.

This Friday will see an enthusiastic band of Parent and Friends volunteers man our very popular Mother’s Day stall. Dad’s please make sure you send your child/ren with some spending money so that Mum can have a special present for Mother’s Day this Sunday. Thank you to all our volunteers – you make a big difference.

It is so important to keep our children safe. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation aims to educate children and young people about how to stay safe in physical and online environments, promote lifelong health and wellbeing and to support young victims of crime.

Each October, our school participates in Day for Daniel but the following website has wonderful resources for parents and carers to access every day. If you would like to know more about keeping your child safe, especially online, then please visit the following website.

Have a great week and I hope all our Mums and special friends have a wonderful day on Sunday.

Amazing Music at Viewbank Viewbank has some amazing musicians; you only need to walk along the corridors to know the students are very talented. I was delighted to visit a music lesson this week and hear spectacular rhythm. I spoke to the students in 2M that talked about what they were learning, informing me that they were increasing their knowledge of music notation. As the students learnt more about how to follow musical rhythms, they then were challenged to compose their own ‘Minibeast’ blues song. Keep up the great work in music, 2M!

Shout Out! A big thank you to Mr. Bill Kersing, Mrs. Gill Nicholls, Mrs. Lucy Addati and Mr. Trevor Ruddock, who all worked diligently to quickly move soil into our recently prepared garden beds. The students enjoyed watching the process and asked many questions about the new garden beds. The new area looks fresh and will soon be replanted with a native garden.

Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) In early 2021, our school, along with thousands of others across the country, will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC). The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the AEDC results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families. Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.

Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole, and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs. Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census. To find out more about the census, and how communities are using the data to help children and families, visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au. If you have any questions, you can contact Karen Butler (Acting Assistant Principal) on 9459 1512.

Have a great week!

Karen Butler
