Coker Softball vs. Young Harris Regional Preview

Coker Cobras

The Coker College softball team will look to make a run in the NCAA Softball Tournament as they get set to take on Young Harris on Thursday (May 9). The Cobras were selected as the fourth seed in the first southeast regional hosted in Dahlonega, Georgia. The Cobras and Mountain Lions will square off on Thursday at 2:00 PM. The Cobras enter the regional tournament with a 31-17 overall record, which includes a 9-10 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. Three Cobras were named to postseason all-conference teams. Chloe Pelham and Taylor Forehand garnered second team selections and Isabelle Mullen was an honorable mention selection.

Over the year the Cobras were perfect against nationally-ranked opponents as they swept both Wingate and Lincoln Memorial who were both ranked at the time.

The Navy and Gold are coming off of a solid showing at the SAC Softball Championship which saw them fall to Carson-Newman in the semifinals. In the quarterfinal matchup with fellow regional-qualifier ,Wingate, they put on a show with a 15-4 victory in five innings over the Bulldogs. The Cobras blasted four home runs in the game as they cruised into the next round.

Carson-Newman, who has been a nemesis in the postseason over the last few years, provided a much more difficult contest as Coker fell 3-1. The Cobras loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but timely pitching by the Eagles extinguished the chance and put the game away. Following the tournament, senior Breanna Strickland was named to the all-tournament team following her impressive showing.

Young Harris

The Mountain Lions come into Thursday's contest with a record of 37-17 and 15-5 in the Peach Belt Conference.

Young Harris most recently fell in their PBC Tournament semifinal matchup with Georgia Southwestern State 2-0 after winning their opening game 4-3 over Francis Marion. Both of these contests were played in Dahlonega so the Mountain Lions will be playing their third consecutive game at Hill Stadium.

Eight Young Harris players - Michalyn Bingham, Morgan Curley, Louisa Disi, Emily Harris, Nikkie Kovalsky, Kristan Lizardi, Haylie Shope, and Jill Torres - were all named to the All-Peach Belt Conference Softball Teams at the 2019 PBC Tourament Banquet.
